View Full Version : how to ID these lancets size???
Over the years I've collected many different lancets, and I assume they are different gauges. Is there some hidden system to tell what size each of these are?
I have:
purple ones
white ones
green ones
grey ones in a bag that say Freestyle
green ones that say "cleanlet kids"
some in a bag that sayt "onetouch ultrasoft"
a bag labeled "microlet"
some light grey ones
some lime green ones!!!!!
These might be all different sizes, but none are labeled!!!!!!!

Aren't all lancets the same size?
It's the lancing device that determines the depth it will go. The lancets would have to be a standard size in order to allow for device settings to always deliver the same outcome, depending on what you set them at.
If they were diff sizes, then you setting your lancet device to say "5" wouldn't always mean the same thing. Make sense?
I think I replied correctly, if I understand what you are asking.

if you know the brands you can look up the gauge online. Like Freestyle is 25 gauge, I think the OneTouch Ultrasoft are 28 gauge. I don't know that color has anything to do with size? The brand more likely would have different colors.

Different brands have different thicknesses of lancets. With the meters that need less blood you can use the thinner lancets. A larger thickness, gauge would give you a larger hole, more blood. Some people have thicker pads and need to get deeper to get blood which is why there are different depth settings.
Sounds like we need a color coded lancet gauge standard. :)

For THe Lifescan One Touch: (they have an L on the round cap)
Purple = Finepoint (box does not show gauge)
White = Ultrasoft (don't have box with me to check for gauge info)

All the ones I have are White, except for old OneTouch lancets and they are all of differing gauge.
I tried the ultra fine and those things bent so easily that after the 2nd or 3rd time it was like using a fishhook to get blood.

Wow, I am very observant to, but I had no idea. But then, it's not like I missed something that is there, because it isn't.
I checked a few boxes I have, diff brands, and there is no indication of guage.
You would think the size would be clearly labeled.
I learned something new today. :D

Some do have the gauge on them, some don't. BD makes one that is 31 gauge, that is probably the finest one made. I think most of them are 25 or 28 gauge. I don't know that the numbers would mean much to most people...fine, ultra fine are words that would make sense to anyone.;)

I'm a real coward when it comes to pain so I checked all the sizes and ended up with Multiclix (30G) or BD lancets on everything else (33G). Typically the lancets supplied by manufacturers are mostly 28G with a couple at 25G. The low numbers are better of alternate site testing.

The purple ones sounds like FinePoint and those would be 25G
White ones can't be too sure- does it say ANYTHING on them? and the same goes with the green
Freestyle is 25G
Cleanlet kids i've never heard about
Ultrasoft is 28G
Microlet is 25G nomatter if it's the white or coloured ones
And the other two i have no idea:T

I'm convinced BD lancets are longer than others and that's how they make up for the finer gauge. The Multiclix hurt way less than the BD despite the bigger gauge.

That might also be because the Multiclix uses a lubricant on its lancets. However, I assume that only works the first use of the lancet, and since most people re-use, it might not be relevant.

The higher the gauge number the finer the needle. I found some Reli On Ultra thin Plus lancets at walmart, they are 32 gauge and work in my Freestyle Freedom Lite meter pen. The box has a list of what will work with them. There are 100 in the box and it was less than $3.75 for them. I can tell the difference between them and the sample ones that came with my meter.

Who knew? I use the OneTouch FinePoint (purple ones). I'm glad to hear that there are less painful lancets out there.
Now, I just need to finish up the 90 or so FinePoints that I have left.. :P
