Since I've been teaching at the Correctional Facility where I work, I've been meticulous about keeping my fingernails trimmed as short as possible and I've noticed that most of the time it is way less painful to test on the part of the finger/thumb where the nail and the tip of the finger/thumb would have met.
I started keeping them extra short for sanitary/health reasons, you would be amazed at what can be gotten inside a correctional facility (or, maybe you wouldn't) but since I test on the very tip end of fingers/thumbs I find that there is much less pain and even where there is pain, it seems to go away/ heal faster.
