The other day I read a posting by notme about testing to see if you can handle fruit. I've known this in my head but up to now have been too afraid to try. Now that my numbers are under control I'm beginning to add fruit back into my diet (so much great ripe fruit in now and I've been really missing it).
Yesterday I tested (85) ate a medium sized banana and tested at 2 hours (87) Yippeeee!
(Today I'm going to try an orange and tomorow an apple) I'll keep ya' posted. :D

Hey Dis, sounds great. How ripe was the banana? Such things might make a difference as the composition of the food changes... so it's good to take note of it. Or, to consider such things, if you have another banana and get a wildly different result.

Oh, great question I meant to include that info...it was very ripe, Juicy ripe I'd call it.
I am SO jealous! I really miss fruit. Heck, I even miss eating as much vegetables as I want to.

Some fruits hit me harder than others.. but just ripe bananas (meaning as soon as they're not green, not the older spotted icky ones), any kind of berries, and melons seem to be fine as long as I measure portions carefully. Ironically it's apples, pears, and grapes I have a ton of trouble with, I think partially because each one can vary so much in sugar content from the next.

For years, I could eat a small banana without much of a spike, as long as I ate it alone, add almost any other food, even low carb, and it took hours to get my BS down. So I would have breakfast, then have a small or half banana for a snack later. Then that stopped working, bananas caused a spike anytime I ate them...I don't think anything else was different, so don't know why. Now I can eat almost any kind of berries or cherries with no problem, but even half an apple, pear or peach is too much. Sometimes, I just risk the high and have them anyway, it is worth it.

I find it very frustrating how inconsistent it can be from one time to the next fruit-wise for me, even with careful measurement.
I have learned I do better waiting until afternoon to have my fruit...if I have it with b/fast or in the later evenings, it has a great effect on my blood sugars. Can't have pineapple or grapes anytime though.

I can eat some fruits pretty well. Ripe bananas are not for me, but if there is a tinge of green, no problem. I usually eat half. My breakfast this morning was 1/2 slightly green banana, blackberries, blue berries, kiwi and 1/4 peach with sugar free Cool Whip and chopped raw almonds on top and a sprinkling of raw oatmeal. My blood sugar will be fine. Now I have done this with (Fage) yogurt and my blood sugar will spike. Small things make a big difference.

I'm where you WERE, still afraid to try a banana. I'll eat an apple, occasionally. A few strawberries and grapes here and there. I haven't tried anything else yet, though. I really want a mango, too!

Talking about banana..we have many kinds of it, and colors (from red to yellow), but in general there are two types of bananas. One that is starchy, the other is a little bit slimy one.
The starchy banana will increase my BG than the slimy.
You may have to come to Indonesia or Brazil to test all kinds of it.
Just an intermezzo :)
<sigh> I miss grapes! Dark red juicy plum size Grapes! But I do usually eat a Apple every day strawberry is ok for me. Plums are a no no. Did I happen to say I miss Grapes!! Sweet red wine! Now I have Grapes on the brain.

i adore fruit with a passion and it really is a great treat.
since i started insulin 10 months ago i have been able to add fruit back into my diet. some weeks i may even eat a small portion of fruit every day. it is spring here and the strawberries are starting to come into their own.
all i have to do is make sure i bolus correctly. and lately, i have been getting pretty good at getting that right...
