I believe it was D ang who was quite against diet pops in some messages here. I think I'll heed his advice, even tho I have always known they wreaked havoc on our bodies.

I have gotten quite a taste for them to, and actually prefer the taste.

Still, if I want pop, I'll cover the carbs, and just not drink as much.

I am becoming more and more wary of artificial sweeteners.

Weird, I am trying to indent the first line, and it won't.

HMMMM....
I'm drinking one right now. Your post is weighing on my conscience. I agree that it can't be good for you, and generally I'm against processed junk.
My father in law has read me the right act on this also.
I may join you. Still deciding. I love diet coke.

one more thing...
I love it, but it makes me CRAZY.
I think I posted about a trillion times a couple of days ago because I drank 3 diet cokes.
My apologies.

I don't drink too many, maybe one coke zero a day, but would like to kick the habit completely too. However, I will not drink regular pop because of the HFCS concerns. Sometimes the "fizz" is just what I want. Isn't there some brand that is made with sugar? Seems like I remember seeing it. Hmmm...

According to The Mayo Clinic's website, drinking a can or so of Diet a day won't necessarily bring you harm. I personally enjoy the taste of Diet soda, and while I don't drink it often, I do enjoy a glass or can on occasion. My choice is Diet Coke with Splenda. If I am going to have a regular soda I go one of several ways - I'll drink Coke with cane sugar, another soda that uses cane sugar, or Pepsi Natural, a soda difficult to find but incredible. Cane sugar actually has some health benefits and gives you a full feeling after enjoying one. HFCS does not, hence the reason why the Type II community is growing.

Wow, Pepsi Natural?

Gonna look for that...

It's funny, I can drink regular Coke, and get to sleep no problem, but Pepsi keeps me up.

I may be wrong, but isn't Pepsi citrus based, and Coke caramel based?

When it comes to diet, I prefer Diet Pepsi over Diet Coke.

Hansens soda is really good and doesn't contain corn syrup.
It's all natural.
I drink the diet, which contains splenda.
For some reason it does raise my blood sugar though.

I've cut back on diet coke and I can't stand diet pepsi. I often have water or seltzer with meals. Also enjoy a light beer.

I've found I can't drink soda with caffeine any more or it makes me "crazy" as Rachel said - jumpy & wired. Never used to do that. I *can* occasionally handle a non-decaf cup of coffee, but that's about it.

So, I still drink my decaf Pepsi products, cause I'm hooked on the fizz & it doen't raise my BS.

I've thought of switching to something more natural like Hansen's but splenda drives my blood sugar up too. :( And it seems like that's become the sweetener of choice for MANY companies. :( Impossible to find any ice cream or pudding (no sugar added varieties) without Splenda. :(

i almost never drink pop. in fact, it frustrates my family when they come over because we don't have pop in our house...they are pop-aholics.

i USED to drink coke, a lot of it, a long, long time ago...in uni...but mainly for the caffiene if i'm being honest.

instead, now when i want something fizzy, i drink san pelligrino or perrier with lime. maybe try that instead? it takes some getting used to, but is even more refreshing than pop, IMO. and there's nothing artificial or yucky in it...i think?

Have you ever tried San Pellegrino? It's very tasty water with the "fizz".

It is delicious, but difficult to find. I find it only at Costco, but I am sure Sam's Club and BJ's have it as well. It is delicious - not as sweet as Pepsi, and it has a crisp taste compared to Pepsi or Coke that cannot be beat.

I drink Pellegrino with diet CranRasberry and lime. Probably just as bad. I am sure there is artificial color in the juice and there is Splenda also. Oh well, gotta have a few vices.

It's a wonderful mineral water but the cost is too prohibative for me. Nothing like an ice cold pellegrino with a wedge of lemon.

I don't drink much pop but do find it can help me avoid a late night snack or an alcoholic beverage so I do have a soda occassionally at night. I've recently gotten Zevia which is sweetened with Stevia. I do think it causes a minor BG raise for me, but I haven't tested enough to be sure of the effect.

Pepsi has citric acid, Coke has phosphoric acid. Both have caramel.

I was swearing off posting today, but this got me out from under my rock. (cane sugar having some health bendfits).

cane sugar = 50% fructose 50% glucose.

HFCS = 55% fructose 45% glucose.

The analogy here: if this was a blog on alcoholism. It might be said 80 proof vodka has health benefits 100 proof but vodka does not.

And just in case the reader does not see the problem. Go read up on the liver disorder and other metabolic mischief brought on by excess fructose.

FUCTOSE BE BAD 50% OR 55% or any significant %!!!!!

No, there are some beneficial qualities found in cane sugar. Also, as I mentioned before, one feels "full" after ingesting a cane sugar drink or two, while HFCS drinks don't give one that same effect. People can drink 3-4 in one sitting and feel none the worse at the moment. I would definitely say that your analogy while makes sense for the percentages of fructose in the respective sweeteners, has nothing to do with the point I am trying to make. I am not saying either are great to have in large amounts, and if you read my post thoroughly you would have picked up on that. I am saying that when the day is done, one would be healthier drinking cane sugar drinks over HFCS drinks due to the fact that cane sugar does have some health benefits, if very minor, and does not make the drinker want to keep consuming, but rather give he/she a feeling of satisfaction or fullness. A better analogy than the one you posted would be one talking about overeating - it is better to eat one 4000 calorie turkey with trace health benefits that makes you full after eating then eating a 4000 calorie turkey that has nothing in it beneficial and you will probably want another and another afterwards.

On the Cane sugar vs HFCS discussion: I would agree that the proportions of sugars are similar and it does kinda defy logic BUT I have learned, anecdotally at least, that the Cane Sugar tastes sweeter and does seems to cause satiety sooner.

HFCS is not natural... it is created in a lab and seems to bypass the normal mechanisms which tell the body "enough already!"

My son has an occasional soda and we found a Cane Sugar sweetened variety... he will rarely finish the 355ml bottle at one sitting, as he finds it so sweet... and yet I have seen coke drunk like it was just water.

IIRC some Coke bottling plants in Mexico (??) use Cane Sugar instead of HFCS and folks will cross the border from the USA to buy it there preferentially. I could be wrong again though...

I do believe that we have adapted to certain tastes and textures which signal our body when we have had enough, but that too many of our refined/concentrated processed and packaged "foods" confuse these natural smarts.

They do in fact use cane sugar in Mexican Coke. Also, I might be wrong about this, but you might be able to purchase it at a wholesaler like Costco. I do recommend trying Pepsi Natural as well.

HFCS or cane sugar: in any large amount (and the amounts in pop are HUGE) I find them both addictive so likely to lead to cravings and thus either torture or overindulgence. That's where the buck stops for me. I avoid both.

The idea of successfully "covering" a real coke is cause for an ironic chuckle as far as my body is concerned. Having a low is the only time I would have something like that - and it's not an event nor a habit.

I make my soda at home. :)

I bought the SodaClub system (http://www.sodastreamusa.com/) and use their diet syrups. All their diet drinks use Splenda. Taste GREAT!

Once you give up soda it is easy to stay off it.

When you do try it again after some time it tastes nasty. It really does. I am talking about the diet varieties.

Hello Jason, I am a Diet Coke fiened too and I can remember the TAB and apple for morning tea at the hospital!!! and I am hooked on it. I even have it with rum. There is a story hat as a deadly addiction to this pop and the means to give it up is a hard thing to do.

Have a read at this (http://www.salon.com/health/feature/1999/09/30/diet_coke/) as I thought I was bad. Pifft Now this is bad!!

I've actually made my own lemon-lime soda with Pellegrino before - it tasted pretty decent.

Puree and strain some fresh fruit like blueberries, blackberries or strawberries. Place a tablespoon pr two in your glass and add the Pelligrino while stirring. Instant bubbly beverage and delicious! It works with things like melons; watermelon, cantalope, or peaches too. Very refreshing and you don't use much fruit for each drink. Just enough to lightly flavor it. If you don't have Pelligrino on hand you can use seltzer or club soda also.

Boy not me. I can not drink coffee, upsets my stomach and Tea makes me need to go to the batroom every 3 minutes. So my choice for my caffine is Diet Coke Or a Diet Rockstar. And without these caffine drinks I get migraines, sometimes so bad that I think if I blew out my brains it would feel better. I have been found in bathroom pounding my head on the floor because it made me forget about the migraine pain. After talks with DR this is not a withdrawl headache. Some migraine med, such as cafoget (sp) are almost all caffine.

I love diet pop but it seems when I drink a lot over a few days I gain weight. I think it makes me retain water, not sure. I am kicking the habit too, but I allow myself one or two a week.

If I had to give up diet coke, I would be in a heap of trouble. With everything that we diabetics have to give up, diet coke is the one thing I can still enjoy! It also helps me from snacking too much.
