Wal Mart Meter and Strips

Wal Mart has launched their own brand of diabetic supplies, including several insulins.
The Reli-On Meter is only 8.88.
100 strips for 42.00
I imagine this will help people that are private pay!

I have one of these meters. I use it as my "backup" since my ins. has a copay for my Ultra strips. :thumbsup: :D

I've used Accu Chek for years.
I like it...I have always had insurance to cover the strips, and my Dr. would write it for 4 a day. I had a 20.00 co-pay.

I am now without insurance, (In the same category as 15 million other Americans) and just as soon as my strips run out (I have enough for a few months) then as a private pay, I will be switching to the Wal Mart brand.

I've always had two Accu Chek's...one for home, and one for travel.
Recently they graciously sent me a new one of their machines...that I passed on to a family member as I would never afford the strips.

If Wal Mart can get them manufactured for half the price of the other companies...maybe we will soon see the big companies coming down in price.

I've seen a post somewhere (maybe here) which said it costs less than 7 cents to manufacture a strip. I've seen some other low cost strips on the market and will let you know what they are once I find them. I know one is called QuickTek by HypoGuard and I think they have a price of around $45.00 for 100 strips, but I can't be sure. To save money, I've started buying strips on e-bay. Although it's hard, I've sometimes gotten great deals. Within the last year, I've bought 300 Accu-Chek strips for about $33.00 and 400 OneTouch Ultra strips for around $80, including shipping.

Who manufactured the meter?

If Home Diagnostics, Inc made the meter, I would not buy it. Their meters was the first meter I bough at Walgreen's. I used it for a few weeks and ended up buying the OneTouch Ultra and love it. The problem I was having was the meter wouldn't give consistent results. I test several times during the day, and would have to test at a minimum of 2 tests each time, sometimes up to 5 times because the numbers varied so much.

For example one time I tested four times within 30 seconds of each other and got the following readings:
120
102
88
114

Which is correct?

I'm very pleased with the OneTouch Ultra.

Hi ramack, form what I understand no meter will give consistent readings when taken in that time (30 sec). You can do some post search's this has been talked about.

Those readings are actually in an acceptable range of variance. Anyways, HDI does not make Relion, Medisense does.

My insurance does not cover test strips or any type of meter. I found that I can save a little by going to Sams Club and getting them. I can get 100 for about $80 Saves me a little money over time.

Wow, what meter do you use? I have a Freestyle, and if I pay out of pocket, my strips cost $80 at the pharmacy, I'd hope Sam's or Costco would be a bit cheaper? Check out eBay, too--I've seen some good deals on Freestyle strips, but I don't bid on them so as not to affect another diabetic's ability to get them for a deal...

Wow, what meter do you use?

I use the One touch Ultra Smart. And when I need to buy strips I buy them at Sams because I can save about $3 on a box of 100.
