I am sure this must be posted somewhere, but I cannot find it. What is the 6-12-12 diet or food plan? Thanks

It's Dr. Bernstein's recommended number of carbs per meal: 6 for breakfast; 12 for lunch; 12 for supper for a grand total of 30 carbs daily. That's what he follows. He is in his 70s and has had DM since his late teens. You really ought to read his book, "Diabetes Solution." Great insight in how to control diabetes. His 30 carb per day way of eating may be difficult to maintain, but it sure is effective!

WOW - 30 carbs. And I was trying to be under 100. I'll get his book and take a better look at foods. I think I can make some small changes that will lower carbs a lot. Thanks

If you google "read online Bernstein book", the second link (just now) is to site that will allow you to preview much of the book online.

Thanks for the info. I checked the book out from the Library - Read it and then decided I need a copy for myself to highlight. I am not sure I want to be that strict (cut out all fruits and grains) but this book should be important reading for any diabetic. It is well written and has a lot of information about nutrients and how the body processes them. I am beginning to agree - most of the information you get about carb intakes is wrong. I have an appointment with my dietition this afternoon. I am taking the book and will ask her to read it. I now think a dietition needs to look at the dibetic diet from the point of diabetes, not the point of nutrition (you know 6 fruits a day, 6 grains a day, etc). On my second appointment with her, we did a walk through a grocery store to read labels and look for better foods. There were about 10 in the group including myself. At one point in the discussion, a lady (the wife of a 28 year type I) said "then if we eat ice cream, we should get the fat free ice cream." The answer was yes. I thought WHAT?? Excellent book. It also will help any of us attempting to lose weight (the constant effort). Thanks again, Larry

I haven't read it because I thought the 30g was waay too strict for my tastes.
Is it still a good read? I shoot for 60-75g or so.

You can benefit greatly from the book, even without adhering strictly to 6-12-12. Key is maintaining control of your blood sugar levels.
