I just participated in an oral insulin clinical trial. The good news is it worked. I used the oral for my boluses while still maintaining my basal with my pump. The oral was able to keep my bgs in control will taken 15 mins prior to eating and 2 hours after. Now the bad news...the taste was so awful I would rather take 10 shots a day than consume that horrible tasting stuff!!!! I do know the trial was just to collect some data and they do intend on doing something about the taste.

From a personal perspective, I didn't do this trial because I'm really interested in oral insulin. I love my pump and the freedom it gives me. I would guess that even oral would be similar to shots in that you are committing to eating a certain amount throughout the day at a certain time. I love eating what I want when I want to and I wouldn't give that up for anything.

Vicky,

Sorry to hear about the taste, but glad to know that it worked!

FYI...besides perfecting "flavors", I understand from my endo that this is going to take a bit longer since the FDA is now requiring additional testing to investigate any longer-term effects on the lungs.

I am a recently diagnosed (11/00) type 1 - positive for antibodies, but with a few active beta cells still left - enough to keep me on a "bolus only" MDI schedule of 5 or so small shots of Humalog per day (1:25). I eat whenever I want to, but have to have a shot each time. My endo says I'm in a "honeymoon period" for a little while longer. Once my remaining beta cells go, I will probably want to go on the pump, I guess.

Anyone hear of any other interesting clinical trials coming up?

For anyone who is interested....

Just found out that recruitment for a new 2-year trial will start within the next couple of months at UNC-Chapel Hill and maybe a couple of other sites.
