View Full Version : Insulin Resistance Diet and blood sugar question

Hi all...

I'm new to the site...not really diabetic, but insulin resistant and trying to get the weight off so I can hopefully get pregnant.

Anyway, I'm following the book 'Insulin Resistance Diet' and doing pretty good. But I'm having two difficulties and I'm wondering if they are 'normal'.

1. I find in the morning I feel 'sick' for several hours after eating. I've been having a slice of whole grain bread with reduced fat/sugar peanut butter on it and my usual half-calf with a touch of skim milk. Since I feel vaguely sick after eating it, I'm trying to decide if it is what I'm eating, or possibly that I take my pills (including the icky after-taste fish oil) at the same time. A typical day for me is: peanut butter on whole grain toast, morning snack is a small cup of veggie soup and a cheese stick or two, or an apple and cheese stick, lunch is a turkey burger patty and some veggies (broccoli, green beans or a salad), afternoon snack is fatfree cottage cheese with fruit or carrot sticks & celery, and dinner is lean meat, more veggies and maybe a serving of some high fiber carbs (beans).

2. About 3-4 hours after my previous meal I start to feel all lightheaded, dizzy and just 'off'. I was thinking this might be a blood sugar thing, because sometimes just eating my next meal (because it is about time anyway) seems to work - particularly if it is something like a small apple and some cheese....but then there are other times when eating doesn't seem to help -- like when I a very low carb meal (for example, my lunch of protein and salad). For instance tonight I was feeling like this...and surprise surprise...it was time for my next meal. I had a slice of pot roast, two servings of green beans and a 1/2 cup of pinto beans. I still felt 'icky' an hour later. (ate at 7:30...didn't start feeling 'normal' again until 9pm...and now it is nearly 11pm and I'm starting to feel vaguely off again....).

I don't have a blood sugar monitor because I am not 'officially' diabectic, so I can't test my blood sugar. I'm really just wondering if this is kind of normal for this type of eating plan, where you get very clear physical signals that it is time to eat again?

There's your problem. If I ate half a calf for breakfast, I'd gain weight, too! It's way too much food for that time of day! :D

I don't fee sick or icky. How long have you been doing the lower-carb thing. Realize that it can take a few weeks to get used to operating on this diet. (It's actually called the "Atkins flu.")

You don't need a diagnosis to buy a glucometer. Just go to your local drugstore or Walmart. They are there to be bought by anyone.

I actually did feel sick to my stomach when my blood sugars were too high. Once I brought them down to normal levels (with the use of lower carb eating and insulin) the stomach problems and nausea went away.

I recommend getting an inexpensive meter. Walmart has one that's very reasonable. Knowing your BG levels in combination with your diet will be one of the best things you can do to help yourself and your health.
