19-Pound Baby Likely Due to Gestational Diabetes
Ani, a 41 year-old mother from Jakarta, Indonesia gave birth to a massive 19.2 pound, 2-foot-long baby on Monday. The child, Akbar Rissuddin, likely grew to epic proportions because Ani developed gestational diabetes, leading to excess glucose in the womb., according to a report from the Today show.

Uncontrolled gestational diabetes, which is usually a temporary form of diabetes that develops during pregnancy but can lead to long-term Type 2 diabetes, can lead to many complications for mother and child.

For the mother, the risks involve hypertension (high blood pressure), preeclampsia,an increased chance of developing Type 2 diabetes, as well as difficulty delivering the baby vaginally. For the baby, there are also a number of potential risks, including hypoglycemia, jaundice, low calcium and magnesium, respiratory distress syndrome, higher chance of developing Type 2 diabetes later in life and the condition known as macrosomia, which leads to large babies.

Ani delivered Akbar, who was the size of a typical one-year old at birth, via Caesarean section or C-section. Akbar is the largest baby in Indonesian history, but falls short of the world’s largest newborn, which weighed in at 23 pounds in 1879.

Wow... that's scary. I hope mom and baby are both okay!

Ok, as a diabetic mother who barely managed to push out an 8lb 7oz baby over a 24 hour labor - I can tell you these weights make me cringe!!

How did those women endure that much baby in their bodies?! 23 pounds in 1879? I wonder if the mother of that child even survived?
