It's getting chilly out and I'd really like some hot chocolate. Has anyone found any good hot chocolates that don't result in highs?

The Hood Calorie Countdown Chocolate milk is great heated.

I have found I can have the s/f instant cocoa without problems as long as I don't have it first thing in the morning. YMMV.

Half-and-half, cocoa, and splenda works for me ... or, my whey shake!

I've never had a problem with the Swiss Miss sugar free cocoa, although it could be a bit more flavorful. I believe Nesquick makes a mix too, and it come in a big container so you can add more. Both have worked for me in the past, but now I stick to coffee or espresso. Ghiradelli makes a cocoa infused coffee that is quite tasty and gives me a minimal raise in BG.

Yep, just going cocoa and a sweetener works fine and I think tastes like real hot chocolate! I will use either a sweetener or, one teaspoon sugar and cover that with a little insulin (or if I am about to be active, no need). Sounds like heresy, right - but 4g of sugar carbs is extremely benign for me compared to SO many foods.

Try, and test! A good motto...

I've had swiss miss sf (counting it as 1 carb serving, 10g) the past two days. After which I have had my lowest readings of the week. 89 yesterday and 79 today. I had it about an hour before a lower carb meal. Yesterday was Big Train low carb pancakes (about 1 carb serving) with Promise spread and sf cool whip. Today I had it mid day before a hamburger and onions/ no bun and a small sf snack cake (also 1 carb serving, 13g). So its either magic pancakes or its the Swiss miss. Usually after meals with 2 carbs lately I had been in the 120s. Maybe it's actually good to eat MORE often. The dieticians had me convinced to space out meals several hours. Not so sure now.

Swiss Miss and Nestle No Sugar Added work OK for me.
But I do have to count the carbs and take enough insulin to cover them so they might not be the best for those of you not matching your carbs to insulin.

For those counting carbs, the Swiss Miss "diet" hot chocolate packets actually have fewer total carbs than their "no sugar added" variety.

All I could ever find in the stores near me was the boxes of Swiss Miss SF cocoa packets, 4g carb each. Also some store brands that were much higher, like 10g each. The Swiss Miss is pretty gross made with just water so I've always made it with 1/2 cup milk (heated in the microwave, then mixed with the powder) and the rest water. It was okay but the Swiss Miss never dissolved well and always left a thick layer of tasteless, horrible gunk on the bottom of the mug even if I storred it constantly.

Amazon recently had a sale on Nestle cocoa products and I got 2 4-packs of SF/FF cocoa. Each one makes 26 servings and I have 8 of them, so I'm set. The counts are the same as the Swiss Miss (25 calories, 4g carb) but it dissolves better, no thick fluffy goo left over and it tastes better. Since it's in containers and not packets I could always add a little extra to make it richer if I want, but I haven't so far. I find it still needs milk but I don't have to use 1/2 cup, so I'm slowly cutting back. Even with 1/2 cup of milk it's still only 10g carb total.

Swiss Miss Diet also is not bad tasting either. Not as good as the real stuff but I have had worse sugar free types. I think is is 4 carb and 1 fiber.

Swiss Miss Sugar Free (not the Diet- they are different). I put it in a mug and add coffee. And there you go- $4.00 Starbucks mochachino for about $.20. Been doing this for 10+ years.

You can subscribe to the Swiss Miss on Amazon for very cheap. I get 2 60-enevlope boxes every few months for about $18.00. That's about .15 per envelope. used to get them at BJs for $.115 per envelope, but they stopped carrying it.

If you don't want to add coffee, use 2-3 tablespoons of half&half with the hot water.

I don't know if it's the specific type of coffee I drink or how strong I make my coffee, but I've done this, and it creates a layer of bitter horrible sludge on TOP of the coffee.. it's really really gross... to the point where I'd almost rather drink my coffee black than use the "sugar free" swiss miss.

I prefer to just use "regular" hot chocolate mix with my coffee and use less of it... carb count ends up the same, with less yuck factor... and this is how I regularly drink my coffee.

The trick is to put the powder in the mug first, then add the coffee and stir while you are adding it. No sludge on top, just a thin layer of foam. If you put the coffee in and then add the powder, you get what you described.

Funny, I was just thinking about making some.

I believe that I recently read that dark chocolate has been related to helping lower blood sugar as well as blood pressure.

I make mine from scratch, and count all the carbs:

1-2 squares super-dark chocolate (usually about 70-85%, can't remember the carb count for these, though)
2 tsp. cocoa powder
2-2 1/2 tsp. sugar, perhaps a little more if the cocoa and chocolate makes it too dark
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
3/4 cup milk
1/4 cup half-n-half or heavy cream
A few marshmallows, if preferred. :O)

Usually adds up to around 25-35 carbs (35 including marshmallows and a little more sugar), and is super dark and uber-creamy. Yum! You could make it with less cocoa and chocolate if you prefer a lighter version. :O)

Oh, and my blood sugars are usually fine afterward, sometimes a little on the low side, after I give myself a small bolus...
