View Full Version : High BS After Exercise
Hi all - just wanted to know if this is normal. When I do "bodyPump" 1 hr x 3 my bs does'nt rise as much as when I walk/jog on the treddy for 1 hr x 3. I walk/jog for 6.5kms in 60 mins but my bs are always a lot higher when i finish. eg pre exercise my bs 4.4 after exercise my bs was 5.6? Is this normal?

When you say after exercise, do you mean immediately afterwards? It's my understanding, and I could be wrong, that bg tends to rise during aerobics b/c the body is releasing extra glucose to give you the energy you need to keep going. Or something to that effect. I would try checking 1-2 hrs after exercise and see if the numbers are different.

Odar, I don't know what "normal" means any more, but here is my experience over the last several years.
If I do a little exercise when my blood sugar is high, it plummets. For example this morning after breakfast my bs was 10.0. I spent 15 minutes picking up trash deposited by last night's wind storm and my bs dropped to 5.1 If I had checked again, I'm sure it would have gone back up because the meal wasn't fully absorbed yet. But in that range, that is what my bs does.
But if I exercise on a treadmill (say 30-60 min at 8 kph) my bs would drop initially. If I start at 5.0, it might drop as low as 3.5, but it would then start to rise again. For me, it won't go over 5.5 but it will go up. I seem to have a "set point" around 4.0-4.5. If it drops below that it comes back up. If it gets above that it starts falling, but there's always a delay.
I'm sure other people have diffeerent experiences, but that seems to be what I do. I've been playing that game for 9 years now.
Thanks Guys... and Yes I did find that once when my bs was high and I walked it went low, but if I begin to excerise while it's low - it tends to go high when I finish.
I do test immediately after exercising. Is'nt that what I'm supposed to do? I thought that I had read somewhere on the forum that it was good to test before and after exercising:confused:

I always test after a heavy bout of exercise; I usually shower, test, and eat after a good workout. I also test frequently while backpacking, skiing, biking or any other strenuous physical activity. I do more of that than regular workouts.

Happens to me all the time. I will usually start out in the mid to upper 80s and then afterwards jump up to the upper 90s to low 100s. I know this isn't high but the point is, is that it jumps after 60-75 minutes of intense exercise.
I talked to my dr about this and he said its common and as long as it goes back down it's fine. The biggest problem I have is that that it tends to drop about 30-40 pts (even if I eat something afterwards) in a matter of hours causing me to feel hypo.

When you exercise, your blood sugar will (usually) initially drop, then if it gets lower than your body feels it needs to be, your liver will dump glucose into your bloodstream to re-fuel you. If you stop while that sugar's still in your system, you'll see the high...but it *usually* goes down quickly.
So, testing right after exercise is good, but keep an eye on it for a while to see what trend it's on. (is it going down more, is it staying high, is it staying low...etc.)
