My three year old was 130!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just tested my son who is three. He ate about an hour ago and his blood sugar reading was 130.Is this something i should be worried about?

Only an hour? No. Sounds perfectly normal. He's still digesting that meal.

What made you want to test him in the first place?

well my husband has a history of diabetes and high blood pressure in his family.I have it on my side as well so i just decided that i would test him to see what it would read.Guess i worry to much.

BT,
Don't be too much concerned. You are a good parent.

But if you think that he may be diabetic, tell your doctor about it on your next visit.
May be test him again 2 hrs after a meal, & maybe an A1C test.

And remember that home glucose meter are not accurate enough for diagnosing.

If he's showing no other symptoms, you can prob'ly relax & wait to test him until the 2-hour interval. If it worries you, speak with his pediatrician & get the proper tests. My little grand-niece was diagnosed before her first birthday, and she was a very sick baby for a few weeks getting her stabilized. She's now a healthy 10-year-old who's already on her second insulin pump.

Besides, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it normal for kids, especially younger ones, to run higher bg levels than adults? They need more energy to keep growing, right? Like I said, I could be wrong, but I'd be tempted to ask the doctor what normal bg levels are for a toddler.

Also, "A history of diabetes and high blood pressure" sounds like type 2, which, unless you're allowing your kid to eat anything and everything and the child is seriously, seriously overweight, a 3 year old is not going to develop T2.
