My endo finally got back with my test results. My A1c has gone from 9.9 to 5.8.
The weird thing about this is that I have stopped taking post prandials, all I'm interested in are the spikes. Immediately before I eat and a 1 hour after I eat is all I care about.
I've reviewed my logs and realize that I've been on the meds for about 3 months. This is about what a diagnosis of A-, B+ would suggest. I hope this bodes well for going into remission even though I can't imagine ever changing my eating habits and not monitoring my blood sugar.
Thank You All for all the help in getting here.

YAY! Great results. Good luck!
I am 8 mos post-diagnosis, I guess my beta cells are done recovering now. For now, I am running with very happy blood sugars, an A1c somewhere in the same neighborhood as yours, and no idea when I get my next C-peptide, but an A1c in about 6 weeks ... I guess I am A+ B-? Antibody positive, Beta cell deficiency?

Splendid stats, Mike! Way to go! I've devolved to about the same place - it's the spikes I'm interested in. In fact, I'm waiting for my test hour to be up right now - tweaking the porridge again (almond meal & flaxseeds, sweetened with agave syrup this time).
(and I'm determined to try those shirataki noodles too, but haven't been able to find them locally. Asked my health food store lady yesterday & she acted like she didn't know what I was talking about . . .)

Print off an ad for her and show it to her! Heck, HyVee has em!

Sorry for OT - just reporting on the porridge tweak . . .
tweaking the porridge again (almond meal & flaxseeds, sweetened with agave syrup this time)
And no spike from agave syrup! Yea!
115 - immediately prior to eating
101 - 75 minutes later

The cut off for c-peptide is .9. You would be A+ B+. Antibody positive and beta cell positive.

I get them at asian food stores where they are dirt cheap. If you do get some beware! They seem to do a good deal of swelling once you down them. Try a half cup for starters.
I've got the Agave syrup but haven't got around to testing on it. How much of it did you use?
Finally, my GP wants to test my lipids but he tacked on a bg test that I have to fast for 12 hours. ARRG! I hate those things and I haven't found any use for the test either. It records my DP. What good is that?
Mike
Cutoff varies from lab to lab, I think mine was 1.1 but anyhoo, I do have an underlying beta cell deficiency, just not that much yet so ... spose technically you are right!

Mike,
Congrats! That is great progress for only three months!

My understanding is that C-peptide results may differ from lab to lab. Is that incorrect?

Not an expert on the c-peptide test but just from looking it appears that different tests have varying ranges. My reference of .9 had to do with the classification scheme for ketosis prone T2's. It states that B positive starts at .9 c-peptide. The how and why they picked that particular cutoff escapes me but it did involve a bit more than tossing darts at a board.

Mike that still is a YLMMV (your lab's mileage may vary ;) ). It all depends on where a sample falls, on THEIR standard curve.

Gee, I need to get this right. Are you telling me that a result of 1 on a c-peptide is different depending upon the lab? I can understand sensitivity, range and error but a result should be a result or it should be reported out as standard deviation or percent. What am I seeing when people report what their c-peptides are? This is confusing.

I have a slightly off topic question so if you want me to take it somewhere else let me know.
I was diagnosed at the end of August as diabetic when I went into the hospital with DKA (I though they said I came in at 400 something, my friend says it was 700 something.. .either way, it was bad. A really bad infection pushed me over). My c-pep came back as 1.1 and eventually we found that I had no type 1 antibodies - so that makes me a type 2 who happens to also be DKA prone. Hooray.
Right now I'm on insulin - 27u of Levamir once a day and 10u of Humalin (or is it Humlog.. either way, the rapid one, not the NPH) before meals. Haven't learned how to carb-count bolus yet although I'm hoping to with this upcoming appointment.
ANYWAY, I'm being told that I should be able to get off insulin some day and that my beta cells will start to come back since we're "bandaging" them with the insulin now. I'm eating low carb, should get my latest a1c back next week (it was 9.5 at dx)
This whole long winded thing is to actually ask if your dr recommends any sort of different treatment since if we goof up and run high (I hear people "oopsing" and testing at 200/300+) we may end up back in the ER. I don't PLAN on goofing up, and I will do everything in my power to make sure that I don't put myself and my family/friends through that again but life happens but most t2's won't end up in the hospital if they get sick, etc. Just curious what you've been told, if anything.
And congrats on the numbers! I'm hoping mine look at good when I get them back next week... although I would like to know if that **** anemia is back! Stupid iron... ;)
thanks!

Hey, sorry I missed your post.
My endo gave me insulin but the Actos-met I was on started to kick in and I dropped down below what my insulin target was. My endo decided to skip the insulin.
Sounds to me like you've got both a good head and decent docs to boot! Most docs don't know about Ketosis Prone T2's. You were dx'd in August. The literature I've been reading says that after the first 3 months on insulin, if you are recovering, you might start seeing lows and at that point they would start thinking about moving you to oral meds.
You say something about anemia and I wonder have you had your vitamin d levels checked. There seems to be some correlation between diabetes and vitamin d especially in darker skinned people living in northern climes.
I'll be very interested in you A1C.

Whoops, now I'm the one who missed it! Thanks for responding and sorry for being late!
I don't know that we checked my vitamin d levels - I've got the "lack of sun" thing going on (live in Seattle) but I'm about the most translucent shade of pale white girl you have ever seen. I can't even manage a tan!
The numbers came back and I'm still anemic (slightly) but she doesn't seem to be worried about it. On the other hand, all my other numbers are great and my a1c came back 6.8 (from 9.5) although she says that it's skewed a bit low because of the anemia. In my defense, it also includes my August numbers which would have been awful.
I actually feel very supported by my dr team - I feel like they listen to me, don't want me on medications I don't need to be on, and want me to manage this with their help. I think I'm pretty lucky at this point!
It's funny though, when they print out my paperwork the "type" field always just says "OTHER", so I guess I am not T1, T1.5 or T2.. I am an OTHER. ;)
Strange side note... my doctors don't always agree on what my future will be in terms of treatment. My GP, who knows quite a bit about diabetes, is of the opinion that I will always be on some sort of insulin because I was in DKA at the get go. The people at the diabetes center think that I will get off the insulin at some point. I guess it's hard to tell, it's just interesting that they don't agree. Stupid lack of crystal ball!
It's all about being healthy, I feel like I'm on the right path, and that's what matters, right?

Cool! I'm glad that things are taking a turn for the better. You should check out the citation that I list. It might give you insight into your problem and why the people at the diabetes center think you will come off insulin.
Also here's a link to the vitamin d info. YouTube - Vitamin D and Diabetes-Can We Prevent it? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTtmvMvgfl0)
You will be very surprised by this.
I hope you stick around. There's plenty of good stuff here.
