Hi everyone, this is my first post. I'd like to start out by saying how thankful I am to have found this forum. I am not diabetic, but have been diagnosed with hypoglycemia. We are currently undergoing a series of tests to figure out the underlying cause of my low blood sugar.

Typically, I'm a very active and healthy teenager (I run Cross Country, Track, and compete in elite Irish Dance, in addition for having a love for fitness in nutrition as a hole!), however, hypoglycemia has been literally debilitating to my life...

Exactly 5 weeks ago, I remember being in school, too weak to walk up the stairs. I went home that day, and visited the doctor. They figured that I just had a sinus infection, but did premilinary blood work to rule out other issues. The results came back- and at the time of the test, my glucose (non-fasting) was 34! They actually had to retest it to varify the reading. And again, it came back low.

So my doctor ordered the OGTT (eww I hated that glucola :/)... my fasting bg was 75. One hour later, it shot to 128. Following that (the two hour reading) was 65, and my final, third hour reading was 42. Throughout the test, my insulin levels remained within normal range, thus, the possibility of insulinomas and diabetes was ruled out.

On top of my low blood glucose (had testing done after the reading of 42, and still, non-fasting, my bg hasn't gone above 50...), my AST and ASL are slightly elevated, along with my BUN, A/G ratio, and Urea Nitrogen. WBC is slightly low, too, with the Nuetrophils. Thyroid is good though.

Today, I went to see an endocrinologist. He gave me a glucose meter and wants me to get a reading at the time of symptoms (my body will go numb, and I'll crawl to a peice of furniture with muscle pain, ready to collapse from dizziness/fatigue/nausea). Then, after getting a reading (below 60), he wants me to go in and get blood work done at the local ER to test certain horomones.

This is where I'm at. I've been too weak to do pretty much ANYTHING for the past month+ and it's miserable. But this is life. I hope that they can conclude what's wrong so I can resume normal living. Until then, I'm trying to stay positive.

Welcome to the forum! I wish I could offer some sage advice, but you have quite the opposite problem I had -- my sugar was way too HIGH. :)

Good luck to you!

Hi Julz & Welcome!

I have a niece who is hypoglycemic and basically has had the same symptoms you describe. She finds it helps her if she eats smaller meals throughout the day rather than a scheduled 3 meals a day. She starts off with toast & peanut butter for breakfast, snacks on PB crackers in between, eats protein for lunch & dinner, and has a PB sandwich before bed.

Good luck to you!
