View Full Version : Flu -- what to expect -- YMMV!

Okay here is my (perhaps too graphic) account of the flu froma well-controlled (I think) 52 year old:

I got a scratchy throat Sunday night.

My youngest (5) had already had it, and was only out 3 days. My son (6) came down with it Sunday morning, crying over his throat pain. So I knew what it was when I started ...

My oldest (8) came down with it by Monday night. Tuesday morning her fever was an alarming 104, but a cooling bath and motrin helped bring it down quickly. No resp. distress so I did not cal lthe Ped. My kids are both still sleeping a lot, depsite being mostly better.

The is Wednesday morning (yes I had to CHECK!) ... so far ... I have had the burning chest pain (typical of flu), painful cough, and oddly, VERY congested sinuses (more like a cold than flu). Hard to sleep from congestion, but it is all upper resp., SO FAR. Low-grade fever ... 99 - 100... but VERY tired and debilitated-feeling. My husband seems to have it but is still running around despite my admonitions NOT to share this. It is in the community, but still that seems selfish to me.

My blood sugars ran higher before the fever, just on Sunday and Monday -- more in my normal range now and it may have been what I ate and not the flu. But then I am not particularly hungry either and cannot taste a thing.

I think I am gonna live, and yes I do still want to. But, this is no fun and please forum friends, control your blood sugar and get enough sleep and STAY HOME, and I hope you do not get it.

Good luck, and use hand sanitizer etc!

Linda, sorry to hear you have the flu...though it sounds like you couldn't have avoided it at your house. Hope everyone is feeling better soon.

Ouch, sorry you are going through that Linda. Good you want to live, though :D

Did you get vaccinated? I'm taking not, but I thought I'd check anyway. We have it available now, I need to make an appointment as I wish to get it myself, especially working with very vulnerable members of the community.

Poor baby! Your entire family was stricken!

I work for a university & it is rampant here. Faculty, staff, students, family members. So far, no one has had any serious problems, but it isn't nice.

We're keeping hand sanitizer at our front desk, I have it at my desk, and I'm doing less "walking about" than I normally do. In addition, I wash my hands frequently, anyway, and am trying to be even more conscientious about it. But, I assure you, if I have the first signs, my behind-parts will be home in bed so I can get over it quickly & hopefully keep from spreading it to others.

Get Well, Get Well, did that help any?

Wife just drove 2.5hrs in the rain with a scratchy throat to take care of our newest grandson who is sick, and the mother has some kind of stomach virus as well, throwing up every where. She's bringing me back all kinds of goodies, oh boy can't wait.

Hacka -- thanks, you guys!

No, the vaccine was not here yet and though I got a prescription for Tamiflu, never filled it. The fever only showed up 2 days in, for one thing. I WAS thinking of getting the seasonal vacc but not with the flu!

Barrie I work at a U, too, in a library, no less (so always exposed to everyone and everything). I just called in and two libs had had it a couple weeks back, and now my boss came down with it Sunday night like I did. Quite worrisome. We began setting up a service disruption pandemic plan ... but only a week ago. I have a new employee who is working very hard to cover all of it ... and I am off till Tuesday. Urgh. And yes we have sanitizer everywhere and encourage its use ... but our computer keyboard wipes did not come in! Scary.

Thank goodness, Linda, I don't have quite the exposure you would probably have in a university library. But, I'm very aware of it. We have one person in my office who takes the Lysol around to all the doorknobs in the office suite once a week. You'd be surprised how many careful people forget about doorknobs ... and we can't really avoid them!

I feel sorry for your one employee & hope (s)he isn't frightened off by this "trial by fire" in a new job.

Take care!

I'm just getting over this beast. I took the grand kids to the science museum where every little child got a chance to cough on me. I felt it coming on two days later, cursed, got medication and laid down for a week. I pretty much gave up taking the bgs and just concentrated on getting healthy. Most people around here have found that it takes two weeks to fully get over it. There seemed to be some upper respiratory infection that seemed to hang on. I thought I was coming down with bronchitis but then it let up. I did live even though I didn't want to but I'm glad I did.

You'll be fine.

Mike

Feel better soon, Linda! How odd that you didn't have vaccine available. The seasonal vaccine has been available here for weeks!!

The other thread brought this up and If you've got the same monster I had and expectorant is a good idea. Just have to check and make sure there's no sugar in it.

Good Luck

Mike

Zoe it is not the seasonal flu -- it is H1N1 ... too early for seasonal flu and I DO have a lead on the vaccine for that. But my MD's office had run out of that, too.

Mike I have been using nasal rinses instead of expectorant. This is a very drippy cold -- uuurgh! And my sinuses keep obstructing. It HURTS.

Oddly my husband's most prominent symptom so far is nausea. My son threw up, one of my daughters says her tummy hurts, but so far I have not had any nausea or vomiting.

I hope this crud goes away soon! It is no picnic.

Our daughter & one of our daughters-in-law retain their maiden names . . . in our daughter's case, because she'd already published before she was married, so professionally it made sense to keep her name.

Progress of a sort. The drippy nose has subsided but I am left with aching ribs and back. I think I finished with the fever. Still keeping older two kids home, and DH is still worsening.

Outlook: partly crabby with a chance of fatigue.:(

How is your BG reacting to all of this. I think I am sliding down a slippery slope of mucos myself, BG are beginning to do what they want.

BG are indeed doing what they want -- my highest fasting was today at 114 -- I DID have SF choc pudding at about 8:30 but had it before without an increase?

I am not eating very much. At all.

Marty I hope you do not have this ...

I'm guessing chicken soup is out for you Linda? But you do need fluids...

Scratchy throat, green monsters coming from nose, lots of flem when coughing, no fever yet. Trying to get plenty of sleep, but BG are jumping around a bit, hit 160 this am after breakfast, hadn't seen 160 for quite some time. BLAH

You work from home, I hope? Sounds like you got it ... push fluids and get REST. Hahhah. As if you could avoid that.

A little off subject but I am thinking you could use a little humor right now.

Finally getting cool here in SC, so I broke out the long pants and long sleeve shirts, they were piled in a large open basket in my closet. Sitting here I am starting to smell something, something kind of foul. Apparently my cats decided to use my open basket of clothes as a kitty litter box. I smell, the warmer I get the worse it is. Do not know if I can make it till lunch or not. Its hard to keep my mind off the fact that the shirt I am wearing has been soaked in cat urine. BG are down to 120 at 1.5 hrs, ok

Oooh, yes! How well I remember the elusive stink of cat pee in my clothes! You can never quite tell where THAT smell is coming from. LOL.

I had two abys who were notoriously good at that.

My current clowder does not do that, but one guy tends to be fastidious and when faced with a dirty box holds it too long and then lets loose and acts all shamefaced. :( It is a huge incentive to my DH to do the boxes more often. It is almost always when he is playing with us so we catch it fast.

Beloved Bride and I are going on a cruise with 1700 strangers, well 1698 passingers.

Staying home is not an option.

If I get the flu, let it be after we get home.
