Am new here too. Am Type 1 and have been diabetic practically all my life. Am now using a Cozmo pump with Humalog - find it good. Since following the low carb diet of Dr R Bernstein have found my blood sugar control nearly perfect and have also lost 7 kilograms since end of May 2009.
Blood pressure unfortunately not superb so am on several meds for that. These started after the birth of our third daughter 10 years ago. I had laser eye therapy back in 1984. Fortunately I retained my sight after the procedure. Various eye specialists around the world have commented on what a wonderful job was done. Have had a frozen shoulder which still a bit dodgey - lot better than it was though.
All in all, diabetes a difficult partner and a degenerative one too. Try as we all do it seems to come back at you. The lesson here for any younger readers or newly diagnosed is to test, test, test, work out the carb ratio to insulin and visit your Dr. Also, there is so much information out there now to help improve our lot - unlike earlier on.
Greetings to you all. This site looks great and easy to use!

Welcome to the forums Amanda. Great to hear from another Berstein reader. I read his book Diabetes Solutions earlier this year and have been on that diet ever since. Found my A1c went from 6.5 to 5.5 over four months.
Stay in touch. You may find there is some disagreement here over the low carb approach, but know there are some who support it.

Hi, it ain't over! Yes this low carb approach is definitely a controversial one. For me it is working so I'll stick with it. I now have far less hypos so am eating way less. Sometimes with hypos I'd stuff my face with whatever I could find - chocolate biscuits (cookies) etc etc. This was when I was very low and had one of those survival panic attacks. Obviously no good for the weight and no good for sugar control the rest of the day.
The whole thing of less carb and less insulin therefore better control was like the Holy Grail when I was first read about it - so obvious. To be honest though I did start this way of eating with certain trepidations, after all, all my life I'd been told I must eat carbs with each meal but I found I quickly had far better control. Obviously if I play up with eating then it all goes to pot so I try not to do that.
But sure, not for everyone as our diabetic constitutions are all unique.
thank you for the welcome. I love dipping into the different forums to see what people are saying and doing.

The famous Berstein rule of small numbers. It works great. The big drawback to me is if I even see another Smartie I might throw it through a window.
But seriously, his advise really comes down to eat less and take less insulin. For me the hypos are for the most part easy to handle. Just don't seem to dive so hard into them anymore.
Amazing change.
