Well, I finally went to the Endocrinologist for the first time yesterday. This was an eye opener for a couple of reasons and I feel like I got mostly good info. There was a difference of opinion regarding diet.

The biggest thing was learning that I have neuropathy in my lower extremities. She took a tuning fork and started it vibrating, then placed it on my big toe. I was to tell her when I started to feel it and when it stopped. It started ok, but stopped fairly soon thereafter. It was of course still vibrating. She took the fork, after I had said it stopped, and placed it on my hand so I could feel it stilll vibrating. I have also been losing hair off my feet which she says is from reduced circulation.

She gave me a list of things to start doing:
1. See a lung doctor for COPD
2. Quit smoking
3. Walk every day to reach 10,000 steps/day
4. Record foods and carbs
5. Bring pedometer, BG meter, log to next appointment
6. Eat at least 60g carbs/meal
7. 5 servings of fiber/day
8. 46 units Lantus, 2 times/day (split my original 92 units into two)
9. Take Lantus at same time every day
10. 8 units/60g carbs Apidra/meal
11. Get note from eye doctor
12. Get diet from nutritionist
13. Dtay of Metformin
14. NO SODAS

I asked her about the objections to a low-carb diet, which she called a high-protein diet, and she said:
1. extra protein in kidneys will cause renal failure - microalbumin
2. fat increases IR.

So that's me story.

GOOD LUCK! Seems like there is a lot to do. Walking is always good

Now at least you have something concrete to focus on. Most of those new 'jobs' should be second nature in a month or two.

Sounds like the doc gave you some good concrete action steps to focus on. good luck making them habits. Of course I think many here might debate the need for minimum of 60 carbs per meal, but I think many would agree that 60 as a max is an improvement. All the best.

Rob, first off, Welcome back.:D

I'm glad you got to see an endo. You have gotten some useful advice from the endo. Take it step by step and day by day and I'm sure you will see results. Let me know if I can help in any way.

You know, That sounds reasonable to me. My biggest problem is exercise and I think that's something that I have to do.
The thing is the consistency, Sticking to the model.

I wish you all the best of luck. :D

Thanks for all the support! I did pretty well on diet aside from breakfast. You know it, I went to MickeyDs. MMM, so good. If I drop it to one hash brown, and a small OJ, I can get the carbs to 76 which should be close enough. My biggest challenge was the walking. I have a pedometer, brand new! I put it on this morning and away I went. By the time I started my workout with my trainer, I had gone 4700 steps. I walked about 10 minutes waiting for the trainer to be available then did my workout. I was up to 6200 and called it a day. Now I just need to make sure I go more tomorrow.

Cheers!

my endo and your endo would fight on the street. but, I think this is a really good start for you. and pretty within reach.

but I think, this still means no McDonalds Rob. and I point this out because I love you.

mcdonalds, is not good carbs, or high fiber or low fat or any of that.

I am stopping smoking again rob. going into to day 3. I have little to say about this, since I quit for months. once for 2 years, and I keep starting back up. I suck.

I think a pedometer is an awsome idea. I am going to get one.

and good luck rob.

Good luck quitting smoking Yannah. I will pray for you that you suceed. I wish I could quit chewing. Quit my 25 year addiction to meth was easier than quiting chewing.

Are you seriously kidding? Or just in denial? Going over your carb limit by more than 25% is just not cool.. and definitely not "close enough". It is actually insanely simple to have a nice and very filling breakfast without coming close to 60g cho.

MdD's is a HORRIBLE thing to eat in the morning (or well, EVER, really)... even as a T1 using insulin (which many on this forum seem to equate to a "license to eat whatever and just cover it with insulin") I can't do it. Not even close... and that's without the OJ!

I agree with you totally Sarah... unfortunately the Endo's To Do List states : "6. Eat at least 60g carbs/meal"... a pity she did not at the very least, specify the "quality" of those carbs...

Think about this... OJ is a great way to quickly combat a hypo.

rob, If I could I would come over and make two eggs, alittle cheese some peppers onion mushrooms, and wrap it in a low carb tortilla. takes about 8 mintutes. water.....mmmmmm!
water is awsome.. just saying...

I just want to say good luck to you! I love McDonald's breakfast but I haven't touched it since Dx -- too scared to.

Glad to hear you're seeing a trainer, hopefully that'll help you out. Do you like diet sodas at all? Just thinking that may be a decent substitute for OJ.

Well, I did go to MickeyDs this morning. I had the BE&C Biscuit and a hash browns and ditched the OJ for water. This comes out to 51g carbs.

I think the Endo instruction is actually:
6. Eat 60g carbs/meal
I got the impression that she wanted me to eat at least 60g, but not over. I'm to take 8 units of Apidra each meal to cover.

The one I am having difficulty picturing is
7. 5 servings of fiber/day
I know fruits and vegetables are good sources of fiber, but not all fruits and veggies. For instance, I believe eating an apple, with skin, would constitute a serving of fiber but not sithout the skin. Any ideas?

I love fresh pecans. A serving of those has 5g of fiber. The Atkin's DayBreak bars (I like the peanutbutter fudge crisp ones) have about 14g of carbs, and 8g of the 14 is fiber. I think the Chocolate Caramel ones have 11g of fiber per bar. I just prefer PB over chocolate.

There are lots of cereals that are high in fiber as well, but I don't know how well they would do -- they cause my sugars to spike a bit.

I dunno, I say add a serving of pecans to your diet. :P

Edit: My wife also takes FiberCon -- it's just in the form of a vitamin size pill. She takes it for a different reason, but it's a good source and I don't believe that it has any other carbs in it? I could be wrong there though.
