I will be having this procedure on Thursday (at about 8:00AM) this week. This procedure requires a complete emptying of the bowels the day before and only the consumption of clear liquids after that. I have just started on a pump (Ping) and I expect this will actually help managing my BG. I am pretty confident of my basal rates and have reasonable good settings through the DP period in the morning. One thing I am wondering whether the absence of anything in the digestive system will have an effect on the dawn phenomenon?
I want to try very hard to have a good BG reading just before the procedure and possibly reduce my basal rates by 10-20% during that period to prevent dropping into a hypo range. I would rather be a little high than go too low. Does that sound like a good plan?
Thanks Pat

I tried to run my blood sugar a bit high before my colonoscopy. I woke up the morning before with a blood sugar of 79. Not being able to eat or drink I didn't do anything and hoped just the act of getting up and getting my day going would bring my blood sugar up. Thankfully, it did. I really didn't want to go through the prep again. By the time I was being readied for the procedure, my blood sugar was 140. I did not treat as anesthesia tends to make me run low. I woke up and my blood sugar was in the 80's.
Hint for colonoscopy prep. Drink a TON of water starting two days before the procedure! A nurse who worked for a gastro doctor told me that the biggest mistake people make is not hydrating before the procedure. The very quick loss of fluids can dehydrate people and the anesthesia can make you nauseated if you don't hydrate. Also, go to McDonalds and get one of their giant straws. This helped me a LOT to get the prep down. I read that hint on a website for people who where having the procedure. Chill the liquid at least six hours before you drink it and have a ginger ale chaser. I used Zero, a powerade sugar free drink to help hydrate me and keep me from getting hungry. I liked the strawberry one (unusual for me). You can also eat clear hard candy. Nothing with red dye in it. The powerade drink was fine.
Those are my best tips for you. They are what made my procedure much easier.
Good luck. It was a lot easier than I expected.
