How many of you have a nice little reward after a great meal?
Funny I had posted this on another thread... and was complaining because I consider this a downfall ... only because its the sugar that I'm craving. Even before Dx I was not big on Carbs but would simply thrive on sugars - maybe for stimulant ? who knows:(

OK So this maybe a lost thread then. :( I would think that as long as you know that to allow a sweet treat that you can count within your limits. I can just see low carbers will knock back a sweet treat only concerned about their instruction.
I am a firm believer in the hard work at physical energy is to replenish with good carbs. But if you are quite stationary with very little effort then I can understand the need to say no. So it's personal preference I would think.

If I wanted a sweet snack I would have one cause I eat a normal amount of carbs anyway, but I don't have cravings so "I don't think about it".

Since my sweet tooth isn't highly developed, I'd be more likely to want something like a slice of toasty garlic bread. I voted "don't think about it" because, while it's bad carbs I DO think about, it isn't necessarily sweets (and far be it from me to stray off topic . . . http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b202/sneezytwo/lilreddevil.gif http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b202/sneezytwo/lilreddevil.gif http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b202/sneezytwo/lilreddevil.gif)
p.s. Could we please have a mod merge these two threads? http://www.diabetesforums.com/forum/type-2-diabetes/44849-my-problem-is.html

Maybe it is habit from my childhood but I am used to a dessert after a meal (so long as I cleared my plate :D) so I guess I do have a little craving from time to time. For me the answer is to mix real whole foods... for example: last night my son was over, and we had sauteed chicken in a spicy sauce with steamed broccoli (he had wholewheat pasta as well)... about 1/2 hour after the meal we each had some frozen wild blueberries with heavy cream.
I find this approach has far less BG impact than if I were to just eat something sweet by itself... more like a long slow waveform, than a rapid spike ;)

I never cared about sweets until I got married. My wife is a chocaholic. Now, I usually have one or two pieces of the Dove Dark Chocolate, or a couple of bites of whatever it is that she gets.

I'm more into "salty treats" than sweets, preferring appetizers to desserts. Even if I have something sweet, I have to follow with something salty as I "can't end up on a sweet note." Hubby is the exact opposite, needing a bite of something sweet after his meal.

Count me in on dessert! I have a wicked sweet tooth! Kids and I enjoy choc chips with a scoop of bp. Yum:D

You are not alone! In my ideal world, treats would be anything involving cruchy or chewy salt and fat carriers. Mmmmm....a slice of rosemary baguette with a dollop of Cambozola! Or homemade full-carb tortilla chips with hot hot hot salsa. Heaven.

My response is largely copied from ODAR's thread.
I've bought lovely imported Gevalia coffees online that I make with light cream & Splenda. This makes a delightful ending to my lower carb fare. I cannot abide ending a meal with the taste of meat in my mouth, and these coffees often signify a satisfying end to my meal.
For evenings when I must have chocolate, Atkins makes delightful "Endulge" candy bars that are virtually (and dangerously) close to the real things. The caramel peanut chews taste like Snickers, the Peanut Butter Cups are oustanding, and the Coconut Bars taste as good or better than Mounds Bars.
If you didn't know they were low carb, you'd never guess.
I save these pricey little babies for those special occasions when I'm crawling the wall for something deliciously sweet. I find if I actually keep boxes of these things in the house (I buy by the case online - cheaper), I only grab them when I REALLY am "jonesing" for a sweet dessert.
Please note: these are not the breakfast bars I'm discussing here, although the above Endulge Bars still have their fair share of protein and fiber...and about 3 net carbs each.

Yes I come from the school that was trained to have a desert after the meal and I look quite forward too it.
What I do do however is seek out something that is both satisfying and not bad for me. I try to watch my readings and if something is offending the limits, which once in a while happens even with so called low sugar products, I move back to things I know won't bother me.
Frankly the Schwann 4 carb ice cream couldn't be better and so far has almost no effect on my levels. Maybe some would so test and see if you decide to buy it.
Sugar free puddings, Jello, Cheese cakes made from low fat cheese and splenda, and now some pretty successful deserts made with soy four that fall within the 10 or less carbs a serving are my latest forays. We have lots of others, the main factor being it not be something that is going to effect my readings in a negative way.
If I get tempted by a regular desert at a friends, I might ask for a sliver to try it and at least get a satisfying sense of what it was like. But don't often eat the whole thing as the saying goes.

Growing up my family used to be big whole fruit eaters for desert. I never really caught on to that big time. Once I moved out the dessert thing became a non issue. But my girlfriend has been subverting me though the last couple of years... to a degree. I generally have something but it may be along the lines of a few pieces dark choc, or v. small icecream and berries. Happily, I have somewhat subverted her back, she'll usually settle for something like this instead of the typical sugar fest (but not always).

Cute, Robin...:D
Ah well, serious sweets used to come after my meal...and the meal typically consisted of comfort-producing (hunger producing) carbs like buttered egg noodles w/ salt & pepper along with a side or two of veggies (at least I had that part right).
My BG must've been bouncing around like it was on a freakin' pogo stick...

I am with Granny and JenB....give me a big slab of dark bread with lots of butter smeared on it.....drooling just thinking about it. :o I love a cookie once in awhile, but can do without it.

I need my daily sweet fix just as much as i need my insulin injections:D I have milkchocolate or some other sweets almost every day. Not as much as i'd have before getting diabetes, but i never say no thanks to sweets just because of diabetes. If i want to eat something sweet, i will eat it and cover for it.

This is going to sound nuts and I am a little embarrassed about it.... Glucose tablets have become my "candy". When I have that after-meal craving for something sweet, I'll pop a couple and I actually LIKE them!
I go through at least a 50 tablet bottle of glucose tablets a week. More are consumed as a sweet snack than to remedy a low. I buy the Reli-On Multi-Flavored Tropical Fruit from Wal-Mart.
I've wondered if I've become addicted to this lowest form of edible food on the market. :o

Usually I'm good about staying away from sugary candies and such, but when it comes to oreos I fall completely off the bandwagon. I could easily eat half a large package of oreos if I weren't busy counting up the carbs, but other than that "I don't think about it."

I have half an apple or pear after lunch or dinner. There is such a good variety of apples now. We tried Honeycrisp, Fuji, Gala and others recently. All good. Or I might have a sf cookie, lately Sorbee big chocolate with a whopping 13 carbs (worth it) and Murray lemon sandwich cookie. Or maybe a sf reese's peanut butter cup or sf peppermint hard candy, both 5 carbs.
I have a collection of sf cookies now. I only eat one at a time, but I'm so excited to see new ones in stores I buy more. Oh and I was getting sf cupcakes, tastykakes or baking low carb muffins from Dixie carb counters.
Yeah, my sweet tooth hasn't gone away. But six months ago I was digging in to a bag of chocolates not one piece a day!
I voted yes, but my idea of a sweet is a tiny piece of bitter chocolate, or a cup of cocoa -- about 5 - 6 g carb worth!

Add one more "sweet" that won't be coming back into my house . . . the Atkins endulge peanut butter cups. Here again, I canNOT eat just one (or even two). :(
I CAN tolerate half a Jonagold apple with a smear of peanut butter, and that's very satisfying.
Fig Newtons are my weakness, woud eat a whole row at a time, just as fast as I could, before my duaghter could get to them. She weighs 100lbs soaking wet with lead shoes on.
Had one the other day, whew, now they will give your pancreas a workout.

I was just coming on to post a candy question and found this. I'm glad that i'm not the only one that can't say goodbye to real chocolate. I don't mind sugar free but it can get expensive.. Here's my issue right now
When i'm home I can really get into only have sugar free snacks. I'm big on pudding now since they have the sugar free/fat free ( and it's always on sale)...but my problem is at work. Since it's almost halloween there is candy everywhere!!!!! I've always had trouble turning down free desserts ( especially after a catered board meeting or something). So this week i've been having 3-4 minature snacks ( a day)..and I was feeling bad about doing it. I just tested my sugar level an hour after eating them and lunch and i'm at 134 ( 128 after the gym this morning).
Does that mean i'm ok having real candy every now and then?

I am with you Linda, Sometimes I will indulge in a sweet thing but I will look at something else. Even if it's another leg of chicken. :o:D I am going to have to shift the weight and that means exercise. :( But having a sweet thing is not a bad thing I think. ;):D

What are you at two hours, or three hours, after eating? (You may not be maxing out at one hour--depends on what you're eating.) It also depends on what your personal blood sugar targets are.

I usually check my levels two hours after eating and get numbers between 120-160. I was told that sometimes sugary items could raise ur sugar 30min to an hour after eating them so that is why I checked after an hour.
Overall I don't need to be eating any sweets. So i'm just going to try to ignore the work treats.

Most evenings I have a sweet after dinned. I have it one hour or more after my meal. I do a 1 hour PP check and if I am below 120 I get desert. I am a chocoholic so my wife makes a flourless chocolate tort cake which does not make my BG rise. Mind you I get 16 slices out of one tort cake so the key is like any carb we eat has to be in moderation. She also make a flourless lemon tort cake with ricotta cheese and that does not raise my BG much either. If I am dining out and decide to have desert it would be the Chocolate Mouse. That seems to fair well with me or I convince my wife to order desert and have a bite of hers.

I never think about sweets after a meal or most any other time.
What I do get are occasional cravings for Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia. One or two spoonfuls aren't enough. I need the whole pint!
Not sure what I'm going to do when I get a craving now. I'm sure that stuff is indistinguishable from poison to my body now.

Though I'm noticing that my pancreas wakes up when I give it a little jolt and my numbers can actually go down as a result of raising or real sugar sweetened 'carob chips' or 'semi sweet morsels'.

Sometimes I buy chocolate biscuits called Timtams. These are DIVINE! There are 11 or so carbs per biscuit. These I can happily munch on til I've eaten five or six - absolutely terrible but so worth it! Hence I don't buy them very often....

When we have family meals we don't on a regular basis have dessert. Or at least right after the meal.
My wife is a very good cook and NOT eating is my challenge at home. Therefore, WHEN we eat as a family I try to eat as MANY vegetables or SALAD as possible, before plowing through the main course. I just hope that this helps slow me down.
At work, it is much easier to control my eating.
Just trying to be real..... (not correct).
Do I have a craving later on in the evening for cookies or a sweet snack? Yes.
At that point, the kids love to go with Dad to get Cream Horns from Save A Lot on Altamont Avenue in Rotterdam. Amazing prices with amazing junk food (good prices also on Tortilla chips). Save A Lot also has a very good produce section....
(Love the survey thing....keeps it all real!)

I've got your back on this one. Do you want me to say yes or no ?
Based on those scores I would say yes.
But not based on lack of knowledge what your goal is for going to the gym is.....
What does your CDE or personal trainer say? What is your goal?
If you are training for a bodybuilding contest, no.
If you want to fit it into your meal plan, maybe.
Are you motivated by 'America's Biggest Loser' and busting your butt to achieve your goal ?, then I will say no.
I am built like a Dad. I have my moods about food.
I have your back, and can answer question with more info on personal goals...

I like a slice or two of strong blue cheese after dinner, it does the trick for me, Stilton is my current fave, you need a good mature one. Or I make some chocolate & pecan muffins or cookies, with flax or nut flour. I try to make a big batch when I cook them, so I have them handy, when the urge arises.
