Near 43 year old, just diagnosed with hba1c of 12.5 Big soda drinker, loved my cupcakes and pasta. Obviously did not know I had diabetes so was eating my usual until diagnosed.
My doc say we will get under control, and numbers should go down in a few months, anyone ever been in this situation. REALLY SCARED !!!!!!

We've all been in that situation and don't worry! You'll get it down and get in control of it. :) It's just a matter of time.
Good luck to you and welcome to the forums. You've found a great place for information and understanding.

Thank you, I am sooo scared of this. Am going to find out which type I have this week as Dr. was unsure. Ican't put into words the anguish and depression I felt this week when diagnosed, but I am sure I will prevail, especially with boards such as this to help educate me. Thanks.

It's tough to deal with at first, but let me tell you!
I was diagnosed back in August with an A1c a little lower than yours. Once I got my numbers in control (Just diet and exercise, with one pill a day for me), I felt like a million bucks! I didn't even KNOW that I was feeling bad until I got everything back in control. Now it's just So Much Better! So much more energy! My stomach used to always give me trouble and it's been rock solid since I've gotten in control.
I'm still in the phase where I'm considering it more of a blessing than a curse. It's not all bad news. :)
Feel free to ask any questions you may have. There will be much more knowledgeable folks than me along any time now.

I was just diagnosed in July. A1C was 9.9 and just retested in Oct with only taking 5 mg daily of liprosine to 6.6. Changed my diet completely and try to exercise at least a few times a week. Have lost 28 lbs and am on my way! You can do it! I too loved my soda and cupcakes, you just need to find ways to satisfy those cravings with healthy foods and lots of water!

The things that firghten me more are the long list of possible complications with this disease. Retinopathy being the lead one I worry about now. When I go to endocrinologist this week I will also set up eye appt with opthomalogist. My doc said from what she could see through regular pupil it looked good, but need to get pupil dilation for full check. I have had floaters for a long time, one particular seems to bother me more in the last 2 years...hoping that is not bad news for me !

I'm 42. I was at 13.2 when diagnosed in April. It is scary but very manageable! I too was a big fan of soda - Dr. Pepper was my addiction. I cut out soda completely for 2 months and now enjoy the occasional Diet Dr. Pepper (which I never liked before but now LOVE). Oh and my last hba1c was 5.5! Good luck - you CAN get this under control!
