Hi all,

I'm new to the forum, but not to diabetes type II. Long story short, I finally started taking meds ([Januvia 100 mg) 3 months ago to address the issue. Got my 3 mos. A1C back today and NO CHANGE.

Doc prescribed and gave samples of Janumet 50/500. He told me to take it with a meal. Okay --- that's fine. My problem is am I supposed to only take ONE per day? (I know -- call the doctor and clarify dummy!!) He didn't write out any script and gave me enough samples for 3 mos. at ONE per day.

Seems strange that I'd be dropping the Januvia (sitagliptin) side of the med by 50 mgs per day.

I promise to call him tomorrow, but wondered if this was common to have a doc make this particular type of change. What is the point of continuing to take sitagliptin if it didn't do anything, much less at half the dose?

I've read some of the posts here and feel a certain "buzz" of excitement about making positive changes in our lives. I was a caregiver for awhile and forgot to take care of myself. Now is my time I guess.

Thanks for any input! :)

Welcome Less is More! Glad you found the forums.

Do call your doctor to clarify the instructions.

My guess is that eventually you will be on the Janumet twice daily, and that he's just giving you time to adjust to the metformin, as it can cause some gastric side effects, that's probably why he gave you samples rather than an Rx. When you're on it twice daily, you'll be on a standard dose of metformin as well as the dose of Janumet you're used to taking.

Metformin works by helping you better use the insulin you're already producing. Metformin 500 mg twice daily is what I was initially started on, and what I still take. The side effects can be lessened by taking with food.

If you have problems with your morning #'s, I'd try taking your dose in the evening.

I have no advise to give on Januvia, but I did want to WELCOME you to the forum!

Thank you for the warm welcome.

I DID call yesterday and the instructions were to take one per day with my biggest meal.

Now I have to figure out what I'm doing wrong as to why my A1C didn't go down. Although my old doctor had me checking my blood sugar 3x per day, this doc hasn't mentioned it and I gave up on that a long time ago. I think he realizes that I'm a hard head.

Do you think monitoring is absolutely necessary? I'm not over the top with my A1C -- only at 7.3, but it's gradually gone up over the past couple of years.

I'll be browsing the forums to pick up on tips to beat this thing back.

Thanks again.
