Hello everyone, I am new to this site but not new to diabites. I was diagnosed in July of 1993 with T2. I have not had good luck with controling my bs for most of that time. I keep going to Dr. and they keep messing around. I was put on insulin for one week while in hospital in '94 and had good luck for 5 years but since then have been having bs higher than what they should be. The Dr. that I have now is seriously thinking of putting me on insulin if these last pills he put me on don't work. I have been on metformin and glyburide for all of the time I have been diabetic. They have tried different amounts and with other meds. The Dr. now has taken away the metformin and put in it's place Advantia. I have heard some bad things about this med. Does anyone know for sure what it is like?
Thank you for allowing me to come to your forum and ask questions. If I had know about the site sooner I would have been here sooner.:-).
I am 59 and live with my husband on a farm in central Alberta.

Hello and welcome Dode,

This is a great site to learn stuff, ask questions and make some friends regarding diabetes. The people here are ready and willing to listen and help in any way that they can. Im glad you finally found this place!I hope to see you around often. :)

Well... Im a T2, but only for a couple of months, so I dont know much. I have been on metformin since I was diagnosed. My doc upped my dose 2 weeks ago to help better control my bs levels. My bs is good/ok throught the day/after meals but Im having trouble bringing my morning fasting numbers down. I guess Im a "work in progress person". I have not tryed insulin or Advantia so I reeally cant help you with your question. Sorry. :(

I hope you can find the help you need. Im sure there is someone here who can answer your question. Good luck! And take care. :)

Welcome to the fourm.
Avandia is an insulin sensistor.
It works to help overcome insulin resistance by making the body's cells more sensitive to insulin.
I know several people on it, and they are pleased.

Hi and Welcome :)

I'm also Type 1, so I don't think I am much help when it comes to meds such as Avandia. I see May has posted some info and hopefully some other T2s will pipe in here too ;) I hope your questions get answered.

Good to meet you and hope to see you around :)

Hi Dode and a BIG Welcome!!!! I am Type 1 not Type 2 but we still have
alot in common. Everyone is supposed to drink 8, 8 oz. glasses of water a day. I know water is boring unless one is thirsty, but it does help to flush sugars and some other **** out of our systems plus to keep us hydrated.
It just amazes me when other countries have no water or unclean water and we have so much and we are bored with it. Oh I'm sorry, Dode, this is not
directed to you, I know living in the country that you drink lots of water. It
was just a thought that hit me at this time. I surely hope that you enjoy
this Great Forum and a Big Hug! :)

I want to Thank you all for the warm Welcomes. It sure is good to have others to talk to that know what is going on. I know I will be posting off and on as I still after all these years have questions that have never been answered. It seems to me that the DR. really don't know or don't care to know as much about diabetes as they could. It seems to be a problem they like to experiment with. I really don't like that and have told my Dr. so. I an sure that there is a cure out there, the gov. just won't tell us because of all they money they would lose. We need more women in places of power.
Alright I'll get off the soap box and wish you all a great day and low blood sugars.

Good morning everyone. Hi Barb, read that you are on Actos. I was also and because I had a time of low bs the doc took me off that one. I never realized how sick I felt when taking them until I got off them. The pills I am on now--Glyburide and Avandia are not doing much at all. I find during the day the bs are going up up up and then during the night they go down some but nowhere near what they should be. I think insulin will be our next move as well. I don't want diabetis to take me like it did my mother. I'll keep fighting it as long as I can.
Everyone have a great day.

I know several type 2's that are taking Actos!
They swear by it!
They make them in three strengths, a 15mg, 30mg and 45mg.
Do you know what strength you were on?

They are a "very expensive" oral pill.
For a 30 day supply the 15mg runs about 110.00
The 30mg about 172.00
and the 45mg about 195.00

Hopefully your Dr. will soon get you on a good regiment!

Hi May
guess i would feel better about Actos if it didn't take so long to kick in....it takes 12 weeks to kick into your system, I have only been on them 4 weeks..thank goodness the pills i have the Dr. has been giving me boxes of samples I know they are not cheap :(

Hello again, I was on the Actos for 2 years. Now when I look back I was going down hill right from day one. I lost what little energy I had. I wanted to sleep far more than I should have, had headaches far too much and too severe. My feet and legs were always swollen. Now my legs are down most of the time and the only time my feet swell is when I am on them alot. I still don't have much energy but am hoping that it will return when I get my bs under control. These last pills the doc put me on I really don't think are doing much good. I take them in the morning and all through the day my bs go up and usually 2 hrs. after supper they are around 25, however in the mornings they are around 16, and that is after only taking the glyburide at night. What a weird thing this diabetis is. I hope that if you stay on the Actos Barb, that it doesn't treat you the same as it did me.
Well folks I will bid you a good night and a good morning as it is now 12:10 my time , which is Mountain Standard time.
