Went to my doc today, jury still out on whether type 1 or 2, islet cell ab screens to come back. insulin serum at 7. Thinks might be more to type 1 but not sure. I AM SCARED:eek:  out of my wits !!

I know that I will do whatever I must to help fight my diabetes, but am I worse off with 1 than 2 if diagnosed?? IS one better than the other?, not that either is any good !!

My first week treatment on lantus glargine, sugar went from 288 to between 120-170 even after meals on 7 units insulin once at night. She was very happy with my progress as a beginner.

Please, I am 43, do I have a lifetime of inevitable infections, nerve disease, kidney disease and eye problems to look forward too? I envisioned myself living into my 80's......still possible with this **** disease??? I hope !

Thanks

Tom

With attention to management for the rest of your life, healthy 80's should be very attainable. That's my goal, and I was diagnosed 34 years ago.

You can't do it alone!

If that was a fasting test, a result of 7 is within normal range.. which does not honestly suggest T1. You need to request antibody testing done to be sure.

All the serum insulin results tell you right now is that your body is not producing too much insulin which could suggest you are highly insulin resistant - but there's likely something else going on causing the insulin your body is making to not work effectively.

I have islet cell binding, and IGF protein binding tests pending...are these the ones you refer too ?

Also (some protein in urine) microalbumin random at 50, normal is <30, but doc said was a long term possible predictor of kidney problems but glucose management and new lisinopril for my pressure would help correct it.

My AIC went from 12.5 to 12.3 in just one week from getting first blood test done a week before, without treatment. But on treatment numbers getting better.

Weekly is too much. An agressive daily self monitoring regimen is highly recommended by most here. Definately by me.

A 12.5 suggests you've had it for awhile. Type 2 IMO. Do you have weight to lose too? If so, it's very very likely type 2.

already monitoring daily. Yeah, lost weight through the months....from 210 to less than 180.

I read horror stories of not taking correct insulin for type 1 and being left in comas, caridac failure, andso on.......Oh man, do all type 1 go into hypo states alot, and can it be prevented? Biggest fear is sleeping when going hypo.

Hi Tom,

You'll be fine. I've been D 42 years. You've got lots to learn, hang in there and ask plenty of questions. The cases you refer to of going into coma heart failure etc are for the most part extreme hypo incidences. Being scared is normal.

Yes - and I am glad to hear they are already being done. I had normal c-peptide levels (I don't think I ever had a serum insulin level done) and I had to fight to get the antibody testing done to show I wasn't a T2... my original doc just kept pushing all kinds of oral meds and my BG just kept going higher and higher. I had already been on insulin through a pregnancy (and told to STOP taking it after I delivered, no exceptions even if my BG was high) and I had no problem continuing to take it, but she repeatedly told me no - so ultimately I had to find a new doctor. My antibody levels were all very high when they were finally done.

Hi Tom,
If indeed you are also a late blooming 1, I know it can put you in a tailspin to re-adjust your entire life and feel much more mortal. that being said, i can honestly say that i feel a hundred percent better than i did when i was in your shoes a few years ago. Diabetes sure can be a pita but it can also make you re-prioritze your life and actually shoot for better health. The injection thing can be a bit of a drag, but in the long run, the better numbers and health that can accompany good control are so worth it. I wish you the best of luck in this crazy time of upheaval. This is a great and inspiring place to learn about the essentials of good BG managment and the support is outstanding.

I'd like to add, that the awareness of some of the issues we face has also had a positive impact on how i provide meals and activities for my family...so they have benefitted as well..
