All fruits are good for you. The question is which of them can you eat and still maintain good control. To figure this out, try eating a fruit, then test your BG at 2 hours to see how high it's risen; if you've gone too high, try again another day with a smaller quantity. Keep testing until you find the right quantity or determine that you need to eliminate the fruit from your menu. I find that I can eat berries (blackberries and strawberries are best, then blueberries, then raspberries), cranberries, grapefruit and oranges, and small amounts of apple with the smallest rise in BG. May favorite, watermelon, is unfortunately off my list!

Good luck!

No grapefruit if you are on statins ...

I can eat half a banana, or half an apple (esp if I eat PB as a fat to slow it down!), half a cup of blueberries or strawberries. NONE of the canned -- even in light syrup or fruit juice.

Good comment on the grapefruit. Not an issue for me, but I know it is for many. AND...Mmmmm. Apple with PB! I also like goat cheese with my apples.

You are a type1 so you are on insulin? I eat an apple almost every day and I bolus for it. I don't eat a lot of fruit because it causes liver dump for me later in the day or night but I find a small apple and 5 units novolog and I am all set. (I use novolog 2:1, Carbs:units insulin

Berries and strawberries (did you know strawberries are not technically a berry?) tend to be best because they are lower on the glycemic index. I'll have some others in combination with protein/fat, such as with cheese or nuts or nut butters, but if I were to eat an apple by itself, I'd spike. But everyone is different - the only way to know your own personal limits is to test!

I sometimes incorporate fruit into my diet as "the" meal in the form of a soy protein shake. I combine 1/2 frozen banana, 1 small apple, 1/3 cup frozen berries (usually blackberries I froze during the summer), 3 TBS soy protein powder, 1 cup soy milk and a little crushed ice. Blend together in a blender. This runs about 45-50 grams of carb. If that's too high for you reduce to 1/2 apple or cut out the berries.
