I have noticed that when my bg runs high 180-190 that my vision appears to be off a little. Such as light in a room doesn't appear as bright. As my bg drops to normal ranges it improves. Anyone else have this problem?

When I was diagnosed first, one of things that sent me to the Doctor was deterioration in my eyesight. It was not anything to do with brightness, but blurred vision. That said, at the time I was not comfortable about driving at night as I felt my night vision had be effected.

When I got my numbers down, my eyesight improved, to the point where I no longer need to wear glasses for reading/computer etc, only for driving.

Seems to be a common symptom... blurred vision with high BGs... I had the same at diagnosis but improved after control was established. And yes it would change during the day... particularly if the weather was cold... almost like my eyes would get slower to refocus

Duude, I wonder if that's why I had such a hard time playing ping pong in the few months up until my Dx! I'd never thought about that. It's since gotten better -- we have a tourney here at work every Friday. Good stuff.

Anyway, yeah I originally went to the Doc also due to blurred vision (at long distances, primarily). When I got my sugar down (and it dropped very rapidly), my vision blurred more at near distances for about a week, week and a half. Everything that I read seemed to point to any rapid changes in sugar levels (be it going up or down) can affect your vision.

Hope that helps?

Just before my diagnosis I was in Paris with my son... it was early in the year so very cold and my eyes were quite weird... I could see at distance OK (with my glasses) and I could see up close as well... it was out at about 8-10 feet that things got blurry. As a result my son had to do the navigating via signs when travelling on Le Metro BUT the very worst thing was when we went to the Louvre to see the Mona Lisa... it has/had a barrier around it to keep people at a distance of about 8-10 feet..! so I could not see the detail :(

I'll just have to go again someday ;)

When I returned home after the day I was diagnosed, my eyesight became blurry and shaky. My sugar was above 400 at that point. I was afraid to drive. I had my girlfriend come and pick me up.

Once I gained control, back to normal. 20/20 in one eye, 20/30 in the other, no signs of retinopathy.

Oh, and Jeremy - I'd smoke you like baby back ribs in ping pong!

Yes, for me both high and low my eyes suffer. It is from optic pressures. When my BG is high everything is blurry, when my BG is low I get big flashes of white light....can't see a darn thing.

I see an eye specialist once a year to check for damage, he tells me that even if I was an out of control diabetic it would take many years to see major damage to the eyes. But, like everything I am sure it depends on the person.

One other point, I was told (by Doctor & Optician) that if you are newly diagnosed and your vision is blurred (due to high BG levels) it is advisable NOT to change your glasses (get a new prescription) for about 4-6 weeks as when you levels come down it is likely that your original prescription will be fine.

Thanks guys, It is comforting to know that some of the things I am feeling is just a part of having Diabetes. I am sure I will adjust in time. I went to a 3 hr diabetics class yesterday that was very helpful. I was surprised how many people had recently been diagnosed that do not take this seriously. Don't take their meds regularly, don't test, don't exercise and cared nothing about diet or weight. Knew absolutely nothing about D. Thanks again for the info. I am sure I have many more questions.:D
