ok, this is my first halloween with D.

since dx in Feb, i have not had a single morsel of chocolate (other than my 85% dark). this is a huge feat for me, as i am a certified chocoholic.

my toddler hauled in a loot bag so big it would last him until he's in college.

my will power and self-control is waning...and fast.

IF i were going to indulge, how might you suggest i bolus? would a pre-bolus work best because they are fast acting?

help!

PS- i really feel for you all who had T1 as kids. i really, really do.

I say shoot and eat! Then test, test, test and be willing to adjust for the coming high. Try something like peanut M&M's. At least you'll have the nuts to slow the sugar down. I'm thankful not to have the chocolate gene, but other things certainly beckon me (like the sourdough olive bread that just came out of my oven!)

When I want to eat a piece of chocolate I reach for the sugar free Dove milk chocolate candy. They are a little bite but are very satisfying and have only 4 grams carb in each. They make a few varieties and they are all delicious.

haha! well i usually eat lindt 85% dark...but neither the lindt not the dove is in the ridiculous halloween booty my son brought home...

besides...i can't go the REST of my life NEVER having a morsel of milk chocolate...can i? ;-)

oh, and BTW...the lindt 85% dark...while not sweet...is satisfying and has under 2 g carb for a huge square...

I liked that lindt 85% dark as well, but I do prefer the dove squares a bit more. They're also 4g per piece, I usually eat 2. They're nice and smooth and creamy like milk chocolate, just dark.

It's the day after Halloween, and I had ONE piece of candy corn. I didn't have any more candy all night.

I don't know how I did it. Did you have some chocolate, and how did it go?

jer...no i didn't. i thought about it all night...but i didn't.

i think i might give it a try this week though, just one mini caramilk or kit kat (my faves)...

i'll let you know how it goes!

i'll look for the dove too, but i'm pretty committed to lindt ;)

I caved last night and ate Halloween Snickers. I am good almost all year long and decided to eat the **** things. I froze about four snickers and just gave in to the chocolate craving. Last kid at the door got the rest of our candy!

I didn't give out candy..I gave mini play-dohs and fruit leather. All stuff my son loves ;-) Makes it easier to deal with leftovers!

Lucky last kid, Nancy - send him or her here as I have a bowl of treats going begging and that need to be removed from near me! It's the Reese's mini peanut butter cups that are my downfall - they call to me from the bowl of treats. At this time of year, I sometimes allow myself one to go with a mug of tea or coffee - at least I try to keep it to one! :o

I didn't cave in last night either; I guess I'm fortunate in that I am not a chocoholic. I like chocolate okay, just don't crave it. I do have a sweet tooth though.

I ate one bite sized almond joy and had that right after dinner so my bolus more than covered it.

Usually I buy the Halloween candy and I buy stuff I don't like (sweet tarts, sour gummy worms, etc) so that I'm not tempted to eat any of it, but this year my daughter and husband went out and bought the candy and bought stuff I usually like (Reese's peanut butter cups, Twix bars, almond joy bars) so I had to really watch myself.

I have tried the Lindt 85% cacao bars, but I just plain do.not.like any of the dark chocolate bars. I've tried the "letting it melt in your mouth" to get rid of sweets cravings, but they just never work for me. I find that I get by better with sugar free candies - they are self limiting in that if I eat more than about three pieces I end up in the bathroom with gastric distress for hours on end. Russel Stovers makes some really great sugar free candies and they come in many varieties. My absolute favorite is the Peanut Butter Crunch.

I ate one peanut butter cup.

I can eat straight chocolate that is not too sweet anytime, so that is what I chose.

The PBC was too sugary-sweet tasting for me! LOL. I am good til next year ...

there was once a post on df suggesting melting a bit of dark chocolate with a tiny bit of butter.... stir then add a packet or so of splenda and add some whipping cream and blend (either whipped or not will work) this will give more the "mouth fee" of milk chocolate....whipped will be more like a pudding....
hope this helps!

... - they call to me from the bowl of treats ... :o

OMG, I've got the exact same bowl at my house! Each time I walk by, a tootsie roll tries to jump into my hands. Two finally jumped straight into my mouth late this afternoon.

Before I knew it, I was chewing and slurping up a storm. And here I was patting myself on the back for being so strong on Halloween. :(

ok so after hours of raking leaves yesterday, i had a mild low (3.2) which i decided to experimentally treat with one half of a halloween sized kit kat (omg..heavenly...).

in an hour, it raised me up to 5.6!! wow.

but at least now i have an indication as to how much to bolus ;-)

So is it in keeping with your I:C ratio, do you think?

scratch - how do you bolus for them? when you eat it? or do you split?

subby - hard to say since my I:C is changing at warp speed because of the pregnancy. but one half of those kit kats is roughly 4.5 g carbs. right now my I:C goes from 1:20 to 1:15 depending on the time of day.

pre-pregnancy 4 g would raise me about 1 mmol; my I:C was 1:24.

I just account for them along with the rest of the carbs I eat. I've never found any need to split my bolus for them, my body absorbs them fast. I've also been using them as carbohydrate fuel while stretching out my long runs this fall for marathon training.

I have been known to take the 70-85% choc bars, slap a thin layer of crunchy peanut butter between them, works for me every time.
