Unknown type

Hi there,

I have been newly diagnosed as a diabetic although, my 3 month average heamoglobin sugar gave an average of 9.11 mmol.

The doctors do not quite know which type I am especially as my mother has type 2 and older sister, type 1. I am 22 years old and not overweight. I have been prescribed metformin 500mg three times a day but instead I have been taking "Jambu" in the powder form. Its a fruit originating from bangladesh which has insulin like properties. its controling my blood sugar much better than metformin.

I am curious to know how common type 1.5 is and what biological difference it has to the other two. It might be beneficial to know how a type 1.5 got diagnosed.

Hi, Minz.

What have your blood sugar readings been with the Jambul? What does your doctor say about it?

1.5 is slower-onset than type 1, but is auto-immune, the same as type 1.

The fact that you are not overweight suggests you *may* be type 1 or type 1.5...but it's not certain. It may have just been caught early, before it caused weight issues. Ask your doctor for more tests - GAD antibodies & c-peptide levels are two that will help you & your doctor to figure out what's going on.

You should have been informed that Metformin can take up to 4 weeks to reach full efficacy(effectiveness).

Hey genie,

With Jambul it actually reached 5.5-7, which i still quite high i guess, but it was usually that high due to snacking on fruit. I guess I'm still testing it. My nurse has supported me in this testing saying that I should just make my monitoring more regular and often, I will let the forum know how this goes, but i gues its still early days....

The docs did keep saying that they've found it early and that I have to keep an eye on it for at least a year as yes it may be a slow onset.

Hey Mortis,

I was not told it would take up to 4 weeks....the medicine really makes me hungry all the time, I started taking metformin 2 weeks before a couple exams and I lost concentration 2/3rd the way into it......hence the motivation to find herbal medicines....

Did you test your blood sugar when you lost concentration? That sounds more like a blood sugar issue.
