Thanks for the welcomes. About me, I'm 45, 5'10", 212 pounds, which is about 40 pounds too many. My PCP started me on 500mg of Metformin twice a day based on an initial fasting BG of 252, than upped it to 1000mg twice a day after an a1c of 8-ish a couple months later. I saw an Endocrinologist the other day, and my BG was 125 and a1c at 6.7, and he lowered my Metformin back to 500mg twice a day due to the diarrhea side effect. I'm also on 40mg of Simvastatin for cholesterol, and the Endo put me on 5mg of Quinapril because I was borderline on high blood pressure. So I've got all that going for me!

I'm meeting with a dietician in 2 weeks. My weight, diet, and lack of exercise are certainly major contributors. All indications are that I can get out of danger levels by shedding some weight. Like so many things, it's simple,... but it's not easy.

That's sure it in a nutshell . . . simple, but not easy! Welcome aboard, jcaboose!

Since I got a meter and strips on Monday, I've been testing myself several times a day, and... it's not good.

My overall average is 159. My wake-up readings have been 188, 194, 207, 165. Most of my readings have been from the high 140s to 190 during the day, with a couple in the 90s at the low end, and one spike to 246 after having a banana and some oatmeal for breakfast (so much for oatmeal!) this morning.

This is after I saw an Endo for the first time, and he actually CUT my Metformin from 1000mg to 500mg 2x a day. I realize this is a very small sample size, but I'm not thrilled about how this is going so far.

I know, I know - diet and exercise.

I dont think you should blame the oat meal for the spike. it is the Banana that gave the spike as it releases energy or sugar quickly to our body. Choose another fruit. I am not a doctor, but i think it is good for you if you can keep it below 120. Metformin with excersise should give better results

Ummmm . . . oatmeal sends my bg to the moon. Banana and oatmeal both would put me in orbit.

also, since you are new to this, your bg hasn't had a chance to stabilize yet. Once it does, you may find you can add in some of your old favorites in moderation; but for now, it's time to be strict so you can get to that point.

We're here if you need us :)
