View Full Version : Thought I could get away with a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup

I did really well at keeping my BG under control at dinner tonight. Pre-meal was 122. At one hour PP it was 135. Two hours PP it was 104. I didn't bolus before the meal which had, essentially, no carbs. I had a salad and a huge hunk of prime rib.
I was feeling really good about myself as I walked into the pharmacy to pick up some test strips when I was assaulted by a sign saying, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups were on sale. Three packages of two each for just two bucks. You have to understand these things are my nemesis. I don't generally have a sweet tooth, except for Reese's! I figured it was worth a try to see what it did to my BG.
I'm sure you can guess what happened next. Thirty minutes after devouring just one package my BG was up to 125. Thirty minutes later it was at 173. Thirty minutes after that it was at 205. Vision got blurry. Thirty minutes later it seemed to have stabilized at 206. I decided a small bolus was in order based on past experience with spikes into the low 200s. In another 30 minutes it'll be time for my bedtime test so I'll know more then.
Live and learn. This is how we learn what our bodies can tolerate, right?
My Using Insulin book arrived today! ;)

These are my nemisis too! I feel your pain!
I have been on a rollercoaster with those darn things since Halloween!

(Psst . . . Atkins Endulge bars include a PB cup that comes mighty close! Not enough difference for me to quibble about . . .)
I've been hooked on Reese's since I was still in jr. high, so you know it's a long-term addiction! I think they cost about 5¢ back then, and the fountain coke to go with 'em was mebbe 10¢!

We must be close in age because I recall those days too!
Thanks for the tip. I've never seen Atkins Endulge bars in the supermarket, or anywhere else for that matter. What kinds of stores typically carry them?
ADDED: Gah, looks like I'm going to bed high tonight. Latest BG was 188! I can only imagine what kind of an effect that's going to have on my DP. Oh well. Good night friends. See you all tomorrow! :)

You're significantly younger than I, Gary, but you have a very auspicious birthdate. We have a son, a grandson, and a son-in-law all born June 2!

I LOVE Reese PB cups! I buy a bag of the mini's to keep on hand for when I'm having a chocolate craving! One or two of them, along with a small bolus, satisfies me.

The sugar-free Reeses taste very close to the regular ones...but too many can cause diarrhea.
Russell Stover has a s/f peanut butter cup....not quite a Reeses, but close enough in a pinch.
You might find you can tolerate ONE regular Reese cup just fine, if you can....it's always hard for me to share them!

I had ONE on Halloween night ... and "forgot" to check my BG after 2 hr. ;)
Stick with the miniatures, one at a time -- not so bad!

Like I said, we're close in age!
All those birthdays on the same day is quite something. Do you have one big birthday party for everyone? Seems to me like it could be a lot of fun!

Knowing I've got two more two-cup packages in the fridge is enough of a temptation. I can't imagine what having a whole bag of minis would do to me! ;) You must have a massive amount of willpower.

Just ONE? Yeah right! Ok, seriously, Shanny told me about an Atkins Endulge bar that seems like it might do the trick most of the time. I just have to find someplace here that carries them. But for those, gotta have the real thing, cravings, I'll see if just one will do the trick. Perhaps I should test that theory today! ;)

Or perhaps I should just "forget" to check my BG after indulging! ;)
Thanks for the link. I've found so many helpful links thanks to you guys. I'm most appreciative for your sharing, caring nature! :)
Keep them in the freezer .... they are relatively flavorless until you thaw them, so you are compelled to plan ahead and thaw them ... one at a time!

Linda,
You have more willpower than you know. I would eat them frozen. Anything sweet shows up in my house, it's gone usually the same day. I guess I've had the all or nothing mentality for a long, long time. I just play head games and convince myself that candy is nasty.

I think it is shame in the face of opening the freezer door, that stops me! And yes I have worked on the head games too!!!
And Jan ... I have no choice -- I am raising three el-ed-age kids! And they are slender, active kids at that ... so ... we ARE gonna have all the things I cannot eat -- candy, pasta, noodles, mac and cheese ... GEE, what kind of karma is THIS? ROFL.

Jan...I have to laugh! What a trip down memory lane...the "in" lunch when I was a senior in high school was a cup of coffe and a frozen Milky Way (or Snickers if the MW's weren't available). All us very sophisticated senior girls would take our power lunch into the music room (yes - music geeks all) and give our Beta cells a real workout!
