Well...I'm only two weeks and a few days into this Diabetes thing. I was losing weight like crazy (as you can see from my other post) because of my high BG. The Metformin is starting to kick in and my BG is dropping which is great but my weight is starting to go in the other direction now! Doh!
I've been trying to stay extremely low carb. I've been eating fairly lean meats and veg and have eggs and turkey bacon for breakfast but I think the real culprit for me is the nuts (almonds, pistachios, walnuts) I've been using as my snacks. Anyone who can be satisfied with the recommended 1 oz serving of roasted Almonds has way better will power than me.
I've been reading the snack thread and am hoping to come up with some other low carb alternatives that are lower in fat.
I just bought three pair of new pants and don't want to go back. :T
Gym membership is the next step.

heh heh . . . I couldn't be happy limiting roasted nuts either! But what I use are raw unsalted almonds. I guess all the nuts I keep around are raw, except for pistachios, so if I want them toasted, I gotta toast 'em myself. :T

Do yourself the favor and get the gym membership or just start walking.:)
Trust me, it works, and it lowers your BS!
And eat the raw almonds and nuts..the only way!

Can anyone recommend a source for the raw nuts? Perhaps I didn't look closely enough in my grocery store but it seemed like everything was roasted and salted.
I love nuts. Usually two oz per day. My solution is to WEIGH every portion. I weigh my cheese too -- getting very good at slicing off 28 g each time!
I also roast my own -- MUCH less salt and no MSG, and I know what fat is added.:D

I buy mine at Walmart - look in the produce department. Both our Walmart and our local Price Cutter Plus stock the raw nuts in the produce department.

As of late, my snack has been Pecans. They're almost all fiber, only like 1 net gram of carbs per serving. Not everyone likes them, though.
And, I typically get them with the baking goods, rather than with the peanuts. I know they also have almonds, walnuts, etc over there. I don't know whether or not they're toasted.
Yup -- baking AND produce depts! I buy em from both areas, as I too love walnuts and pecans ... and PUMPKIN SEEDS and sunflower seeds, from produce!

Trader Joe's, if you've got one near you.
I like the dry roasted, unsalted almonds, myself. I eat my walnuts raw, though. And I am very good at taking a handful and calling it quits. (Dr. Bernstein actually advises against eating nuts, but only because he's never met a patient who could stop at one serving. He's never met me (or foxl, apparently).)
I love roasted salted soy nuts, by the way, too!

Definitely helps to weigh them ... and look out with the salted ones. This is the one thing ... portion control. I now CAN eat one potato chip. ONE piece of Halloween candy. Once you can do the portion control, turn off the mindless munching machine, it is not so bad!
Too bad Bernstein is against them ... many nuts are a valuable source of Magnesium, among other nutrients that are beneficial to diabetics.

I buy the raw nuts at Whole Foods. They are in the bulk section in most stores.

Give the met a chance, sometimes it take a while to kick in fully. for me that drug made me lose weight, hopefully it will do the same for you.

Another one chiming in on the exercise. I was diagnosed about a month ago with similar numbers and had also experienced some weight loss over the six months prior to diagnosis. I have not gained anything back - maybe even lost a bit more - or it may just be redistributing - but I have been exercising nearly every day. My BS numbers are down nicely too. I really think that the exericise is at least as important as the metformin.
