I woke at 7 this morning after sleeping less than 5 hours, I didn't feel bad, just not right....tested, 300! I tested 119 before taking my evening Lantus last night. I have no fever, but my nose and ears have been congested for several days, which I figured was allergies or irritation from the remodeling work in the house. My ears are getting worse as the day goes on, there is a constant ringing and I am not hearing too good. I took my morning Lantus, a large dose of Novolog, and all my morning pills.....by 9, my numbers dropped to 243. I know from experience if I do not eat something, I will have stomach problems because of my medicines, so I ate a small piece of leftover beef, and had some more Novolog. At noon, I was still 230. Now it is almost 3, I am hungry, but still 202. Do I just have some more protein, wait for supper and do some more Novolog, or have a few carbs? I am feeling a little light headed, but have had that happen before when I had ear problems. 300 doesn't feel good, and I don't want my numbers to start up again. Any suggestions? :)

I am so sorry you feel sick Penny. I hope you are not getting a cold, but it certainly sounds like you might have an ear infection. Can you get to a Doc in a box, or a doctor and have them looked at soon? I think you may need antibiotics.

Stick with protein and leafy greens if you can. Don't go without food all together. Sometimes blood sugar has to take a backseat while you get well.

Uh oh -- I bet it is the virus, Penny. No advice on handling the blood sugar though ... just keep hydrated and rest!

((((Penny)))) You sure don't deserve this!

I'd keep eating protein & pushing fluids. It does sound like an upper respiratory infection & if you can see a doc, I think I would. Trouble is, they want money for that, as usual . . . :( :( :(

The money thing is one of the problems....just saw my doc on Monday and the heart guy the Friday before. Between tests and office calls, just about tapped out for awhile. I am more worried about the BS being so high right now, that always makes me feel bad. My ears are just irritating and my nose just really bother me when I try to lie down, saline stuff helps that some. I would like to take some allergy OTC pills, but anything like that usually drives my numbers up. This stuff always happens on weekends too...if it gets worse, I have to go to Urgent care, which cost my "other arm and leg".

I would do a correction bolus for the high readings. If I continue to be high for more than 2 hours I will put in another correction and keep testing. When I am sick I require quite a bit more insulin. I will usually check every 2 hours when sick and adjust accordingly. Hope you fell better. Nothing worse than being sick and having high BS.

Yikes! Sorry to hear about that!

I'd also take a little more short acting while keeping up the testing. Make sure to stay hydrated and keep up eating minimal carb foods so your body has something to go on to keep fighting whatever the ailment is!

Penny, i'd put in a call to the doc and see if he/she could call you in something for your URI. He may if you were just there this week.

Hope you're feeling better soon!

Hi Penny - sorry you're so under the weather. You might want to consider upping your Lantus about 10% or so (maybe even higher) as part of your sick-day strategy. And keep those fluids coming!

Feel better.

( ( ( P E N N Y) ) )

I hope that you are alright. At 300 / 16.6 for too long would make you worry and reach the water or any licquid that quenches the thirst.
Get it looked at and see satisfaction Penny. May god be on your side. :)

Thank you Friends. :)
I stayed around 200 all day yesterday, despite more insulin and almost no carbs. Fasting was 194 this morning. My ears are still clogged, seems like I am hearing through a tunnel, and there is the constant "buzz". I feel drained, but other than that I don't hurt anyplace. I think I need to get some vitimin C, which I usually do not take.

Just wanted to see how you're feeling today, Penny.
I hope your readings came down over the weekend.

Hey Mam,Aw. I hope that you are OK. I know that you like good o'l fashioned blues and the good stuff too. 194 / 10.7 is still high but a lot better than 300!!! So as I thought of you I have selected some JJ Cale with a good tune Call the Doctor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6_M1jF6fdE) as that is slow and soulful moving tune. :)

Get well soon Ma. :D

Penny, be careful with that vitamin C! I don't know if anyone else has the same reaction, but if I take "Wellness" or any other large dose of C, my BG shoots up to the 300's for hours. A doctor told me that vitamin C can destroy synthetic insulin. Don't know the whole story, but I hope you feel better! When I'm sick I try to take walks or at least some stretching to keep the circulation going so my insulin works a little better... depends how you feel.

I hope you get better. I think some of my stomach problems came from taking my medicine without food. Now I can't really eat solid foods cause it won't digest right and it give me body aches. So I have to stick to noodles and soup and things like that for now. I'm sure things will get better with both of us. Keep the faith.

Leave it to you Peter to put a smile on my face! :) Got another song I need to buy for my Ipod, now. I am better, but still running high fasting, sometimes up to 200. I have tried everything that worked before and just cannot get that to change. I think it may be because of some infection, from my toe and my ears.....waiting to hear from tests.

VERRY SCAREY. Had cancer surgery in August and I was told that my 3 month average is in the 300's. The nurse flat out told me that if this was not controlled I am real close to dialysis and there is no way I could handle that. Started HUMULIN R and bg level drops to 100-140 in 1 hr. For some reason when I wake up it might be 190 even if I don't eat after the final test. A puzzle indeed. Get well soon then celebrate, you deserve it.
