I've been on atypical antipsychotics for 2 years now and I still don't have diabetes. I find that to be a good thing but what does one do when the atypical antipsychotic starts to affect blood sugar (hyperglycemia / diabetes)? I don't want to go off the one I'm on now because it's helping my visual hallucinations but I know that diabetes is an important issue too. What do you think about all this?
(atypical antipsychotic examples are Zyprexa, Seroquel, Risperdal, Invega, Geodon, Abilify, Fanapt (fda approved but not hit market yet) , Saphris (newly marketed for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder))

Lucky you! I started Seroquel in February and by April my triglycerides were through the roof, 490! We tried switching to something else, but I had an allergic reaction, so it was back to what works. I just last week got the news that I'm pre-diabetic. Personally, after checking sugars all week, I think I'm probably type 2. Did the Seroquel do it? Or could it have been my strong family history? Who knows. After discussing it with my doctors we all agreed that I'm getting the greatest benefit from the Seroquel and I am loathe to change things.

Just had my last diabetes check w/in the past month and came up fine. I was using the rising blood sugar part as a scenario for if a person were on any of these medications and started becoming at increased risk. How would you handle it. Like I said I'm not going off my medicine but I'd make sure to take anti-diabetic medications to help keep my blood sugar in control.
