I've mentioned on here that normally my fastings are well below 100, it's my post meal that has had the problem. I have not been testing my fastings as much as my post meal numbers for this reason as my doc won't give me enough strips.

I didn't eat for a couple of hours after I woke up today, and tested not long before eating. The reading was 120  . How much of an effect should the wait have had on my blood sugar? I'm getting worried becuase so far, the last two weeks every time I did test a fasting it was over 100. I'm gong toh ave to start testing that one daily again.

Well your pancreases provides several phases of insulin release. Fasting will show how well your pancreas can handle your basal insulin requirements. If you are high after fasting then I would advice asking your doctor. Taking a basal insulin or Metaformin to reduce insulin resistance will help to relieve stress on your pancreas helping it to regenerate. As a pre-diabetic the only other option you have is to eat a very low carb diet which you may or may not already be doing.

Test for 3-days and if your readings are over 120 for 3 days in a row go see your doc. No need to panic right now.

This is precisely my complaint, right now. From fastings in the 80's or 90's, I am going to mostly 100 - 120s.

I'm not panicking, just more concerned. Fastings are generally the last to rise, and on JP's (I think that's who it was) trhead on progression to D, IIRC, it was n't long after the fastings rose that he was diagnosed with full blown D. I was wondering if it really mattered how long after waking it was taken if I had not eaten anything.

I do have an appointment with a new PCP on Friday and will bring it up. My CDE told me to really push for that diagnosis because in their opinion, based on my OGTT and my reported readings, I should not be considered Pre-D. The distinction may not seem like a big deal, but if it helps me get the strips I need to test like they are recommending, then I am going to pursue it.

EeyoreButterfly,

I think you have the right attitude. Treat pre as diabetes and you can't go wrong. Testing times for fasting depend on a lot of factors. Doing the testing as soon as you get your eyes open gives the lowest reading. If you are awake in bed for 15 to 30 minutes, I have found that I can easily be 20 or more points higher, if I wait more than an hour I can be 40+ points higher. This will depend on your body chemistry and how much glocose is released into your system on a normal basis. I am lucky I have the ability to test two or three times on occasion to find out. It often depends on how much sleep I have had as well. I have also been able to vary the late night snack and test in the morning at three or more times and the results are often different by 10 to 50 points. So you need be able to test and determine what works for you.

Definitely talk to the new PCP and get the reaction. Some are aware but some are not. Good luck, Bob
