My niece got the H1N1 vacine 2 weeks ago. A few days later she started to feel ill. After blood tests she was diagonosed with type 1 diabetes. They have been giving her 3 shots a day of insulin but her blood sugar has not really come down. Diabetes does not run in our family and she has never had type 2. Does anyone know if there is a link to the vacine and high blood sugar? we are worried that she was misdiagonosed and that the insulin will do damage to her.

well as a type 1 diagnosed at age 34 with no family history of diabetes (type 1 or 2), i can tell you that she's just as likely to have type 1 as anyone else in the world.
if her blood sugar is high, there is no way insulin will do damage. what will do damage is the high blood sugar!
i sincerely doubt there is a link between the vaccine and high blood sugar.
my symptoms came on very rapidly after a night of too much drinking (though in retrospect i had been feeling "off" for a couple of months)...and i've never heard of a link between type 1 and whiskey sours ;)
you need to get her in to see an endocrinologist ASAP, as well as a diabetes education centre. if her sugars are still high, she is not getting enough insulin, and needs more. but a health care practitioner would be best to advise on how to increase the dosages at this point.
also you say she's on 3 shots a day...if this is strictly for meals (rapid acting insulin like humalog or novalog), she will also need to be on a long or intermediate acting insulin that stays in her body for the better part of 24 hours (like levimir, lantus or humulin-N).
good luck, i hope she is feeling better soon.
how old is she?

she's only 14. i guess i just hope that they were mistaken. the thing is that when we called the government hotline they said "oh no, this isn't the first one" they said that there are two test for diabetes. sorry i am not very educated in this disease. this is all new to me.

There is something called coincidence.
I am very sorry to hear that your niece is feeling ill and the dx of type 1 diabetes is, I am sure, very scary for everyone who loves her. You have come to a great place for learning and support. The good news is that you now have a dx and can learn to do a lot for her so that her life is long and healthy. With control she will be feeling so much better.
There are many people on this forum who can share their wisdom because they have goge through having T1 as a teenager. There are oalso other young people with incredible wisdom as well as just a lot of really nice, caring people who will try their best to help you. So ask your questions. I've always had really helpful responses to all my questions here.
Good luck to you and your family.
