I have a question. I dont seem to be using hardly any insulin. I have cut my carbs down to around 45 not intentionally just havent been very hungry since starting the pump. I have been active so I havent required hardly any basal. This is the first time since I have been dx that I have had so little insulin. My basal is only 5 units. I am taking around 3 units for bolus per meal and since Monday I have only taken a 1 unit correction. Okay I am not that educated about insulin/diabetes when it comes to why I am not needing that much insulin. Is this something that happens with all type 1s? When I did my c-peptide the reg range was 1.1-5.0 Mine was 0.7 So is it possible that I am making more insulin since then? When I took the c-peptide test my sugar was way out of control. Running in the 500's. Was taking 18 units of Lantus and on a correction sliding scale. This was 3 months ago. Since then I have been using less and less insulin.

Okay now for my main question. My infusion set is getting a little itchy. It is not red but it is bugging me. I still have 95 units of insulin in my reservoir. I do not want to waste that insulin so can I just change my needle thingy and keep using my tubing and reservoir?
Sorry so long. I am new to the type 1 dx. Was told for 3 years I was a type 2. Had GAD autoantibodies so they say type 1.
I hope someone can help me understand all of this.
Thanks,
Susie

I don't know why but when going on the pump you need only half the amount of what you would take with shots.

So are you saying you take a total of 8units a day?
When you was on lantus, you was taking 18. So that is pretty close to half.

How long have you been wearing your infusion? You can change just needle thingy. The insulin goes weak if it gets hot after 3 days. So as long as it isn't in the 80 's you should be ok.

No I take 5 units basal and about 3 per meal boluses. I take about a total of 14 units a day since going on the pump. I was taking about 20 units right before going on the pump. I understand using less insulin for food because I dont eat very much but my basal keeps going lower. I have some bg readings that are staying around 145 and some lower. I would like to see my bg closer to 110 to 120.

My insulin in my reservoir hasnt gotten hot. Just room temp. and it is cool here this week.

Your total basal is 5 units for the day. What day did you go on the pump again?

Sounds like your doing good.

Tony,
Went on pump Monday around lunch time.
I know when I fill my reservoir I will put a whole lot less in it. Probably 85 units. 25 for priming. and an average of 20 per day for 3 days in case I eat a lot of carbs.

Susie 25 for priming? I only prime 5units. Oh are you talking about filling up the tube before you do the 5unit prime?
Your doing good for just being on the pump since monday. What was your last a1c?

My last a1c was 10.
Yes I am having wonderful control now. Even better this week. But they have been training me for 2 months now only with shots instead of the pump. That is one reason my bg are coming down so well. 25 unit prime... I am so fustrated. My educator put the insulin in the reservoir and then manually primed the tubing. (I have the long tubing, yuck) and then it took 13 units to get it to push the bubbles out and... She had me all confused. I had to change my canula tonight. (only changed it since I have 80 units in my reservoir left) My canula was bothering me badly and I did a no no and changed it tonight. I HATE my infusion sets. I was so upset that I was sweating and near tears. It took 4 trys with 4 sets to get the needle to go in right. Mine goes in at an angle and everytime the needle hit my stomach it would bend. And it hurt. I dont know if MiniMed will take back the other two boxes but I want the quick set. To heck with these silhouettes. 4 trys is a bit much and my stomach is not like leather. My husband finally had me to lay down on the couch and he shot it in and **** if the flap (tape) didnt fold under. Ate at 5pm, checked bg at 8pm was 112. Did my change at 9:30 and had fussed with it since 9:00 My bg was 173. I think it was stress. Because I was really upset. Hadnt ate anything since 5.

Gina,
I was using the silhouettes. I changed them and I am now using the quick sets. I love these sets.
