Hi ...
I just got a call from my husband, and they are having Eri go to Children's by ambulance. They don't like her breathing and her heart rate. We can't get a ketone test b/c she has no fluids in her, last time she got sick(in the car)...all bile(sorry, TMI)...will update from hospital...

TY all...
I'm home to get a few things for Eri....she'll be there for a couple days...severe DKA from vomitting so much...and it all hit so fast.
She's already on IV insulin and has gone through 3 bags of saline...
Her bp is down to 103/48 and her pulse is 133(lower)...still have to check out her kidneys....
That's all I know for now, will hopefully have internet access from my laptop at the hospital...
Thanks for the prayers...my little one is still sick as well :(
God bless...

Robin,
I'm so sorry that you, Eri and your family are going through all of this. :( As the others said, it's always awful to hear that a child is in any pain or suffering. I really hope and pray that Eri recovers quickly and that you and your family will all be safe and well. You are all in our thoughts and hearts.

Robin,
I was in severe DKA once in my life. It was a horrendous experience, but I got through it with no lasting ill effects. Hoping for the best with Eri and will be thinking about y'all.

Robin,
I can't say that I know how you feel but my mom could. I went through a severe bout of DKA. I was fine afterwards and I still am. :D Tell Eri that I hope she feels better soon and I am sending her this greeting.

Awwww....thanks all :)
She is out cold right now, both hands all IV'd and on a cardiac machine. Her pulse keeps flying upwards of 230 and then plummets down to 38...it's now at a nice 124 :)
Her sugar has come down to 195!!! They told me to expect being here until(EARLIEST release) Wednesday night. I have a sick little Ellie belly at home, breaks my heart I'm not there for her, but her dad is...I have to be here for Eri.
It was so weird when you have a doc tell you that your child is very sick and is in severe DKA, I felt and feel like a failure as a parent right now. This just hit so fast, no ketones early in the am(middle of night) and a wake up reading of 116...then up to 572 b/f the doctor...it hits QUICK at times, doesn't it?
Hmmm...she just sat straight up, looked at me, and turned over...guess she figures she may as well sleep since they will not let her eat until tomorrow(she hasn't eaten all day, obviously)...
I think I'm going to TRY and get some sleep...working on about 45 minutes of sleep since yesterday...I'm EXHAUSTED!!!
Will update later, and thank you all so much for your thoughts, prayers and well wishes!!! It is sooo appreciated!!! :)
God bless :)

... Just saw this. How terrible when your child is so sick! We feel so powerless when they are sick. But Eri's in good hands, in hospital. My prayers and good thoughts for Eri, and to the rest of the family. You're all going through a rough time. Take good care xx

Thanks, Marie :)
Yes, feel totally powerless as I sit here and listen to IV's dripping and that cardiac machine going off every so often b/c either her pulse goes too high or too low. She's still sound asleep.
It's now 4a.m. here, I believe I got around 30/45 minutes of sleep earlier...drift off here and there.
W/ only 45 minutes of sleep yesterday, I'm running on empty. I just want my husband here in the a.m. so I can get to Eri's school, check on Elle, then stop by Wil's school to see him....and then maybe sleep a bit....not sure.
My head is throbbing, although they did just give me a tyelnol....probably from my lack of fluid intake....too busy w/ making sure Eri is well.
I'll update again later.
I was just told that her sugar is back up to around 215...she fluctuates like crazy.
God bless all :)

Sounds very harrowing. It must be very stressful for all of you. And I hope things get back to normal soon.
What caused the DKA? If I remember correctly, Eri recently went on a pump. Sounds like the continous supply of insulin was somehow interupted. What actually happened?
Cheers,
Mark;)

Hi again,
Eri has the pump but has not been put on it yet, since they have her on the lantus and humalog regimine.
This hit really quick. She and her sister both got very sick from strawberries, and she took her lantus and humalog Sunday night, got sick, ketones were negative, woke up w/ a bg of 116, then, w/in 3 hours, she was up to 579(571?) and went immediately to the pediatrician, who sent her to Children's by ambulance.
She now has a bg of 145, but still has high ketones.
She was violently ill, which caused this to all happen.

Geez... go out to look for a new sofa and the sh** hits the fan! I just read all that's happened. Really awful. Robin, you need to get some sleep (of course you know this). We don't want you becoming ill (from a virus, etc.) because your immune system is weakened from all of this physical and emotional stress. It's good to hear that Eri is good hands. :) Not that yours aren't good hands! You know what I mean. Aw, heck.. I just woke up. lol
Please rest up if you can, and let us know how things are progressing. We all care BIG time.

When I get ill, I usually have very crazy bloodsugars also. Hopefully, Eri gets on the pump very soon. I just got on my 1250 yesterday and am still getting used to everything. It's alot different, but alot easier in a couple of ways. I can't really give you too much insite on the high ketones because I've never went into ketoacidosis but i've been on the other end of the spectrum. Sorry to hear about this, I will be praying.

I am so sorry to hear that Eri is so sick. My heart and prayers go out to you, your family, and to your daughter for a quick and complete recovery. Please do not feel responsible for this. It is not your fault. It is hard to believe how fast an illness can bring on dehydration, which can lead to DKA sometimes in a matter of hours. DKA can happen so fast that sometimes there is just not enough time to react quickly enough. Although I know it is not much comfort, I think everyone can learn from this experience and I hope make everyone that much more aware of what can happen.
Personally I feel most doctors do not emphasize enough how dangerous any type of illness that involves loss of fluids can be for an IDDM patient. I have a chart of sick day guidelines posted behind my med cabinet door in the Kitchen. My wife knows where it is and is familiar with it. It is there for reference for her if I should ever get sick. She has been instructed to follow it to the letter and to make sure that I follow it to the letter just in case I get stubborn and decide not to follow them for some reason. I would be more than happy to type these up on the computer and either post them here on the boards or email them to anyone that wants them.
It sounds like your daughter is in good hands and I hope that can give you some much needed comfort during such a stressful time. Please take care and get some rest. I know you must be exhausted.

Thanks all :)
I actually did get about an hour sleep...feeling a lot better...even braved some food at the cafeteria :1eye:
Eri was eating her b-fast when I went down(she made me)...her bg was 141(thank GOD), but as of 445am her ketones were still very large.
I'm listening to the docs outside the door, sorta getting a bit irked...I mean, they KNOW about the strawberries(my husband just got back from the pediatrician w/ Elle...he said typical food poisoning, to call the store were we purchased them to inform them of it). She was labeled while here the last time as being allergic to potassium chloride, but they were just questioning that how can someone be allergic to potassium...I know it sounds crazy, but when she was on just that the last time, it gave her a major migraine and made her itch like crazy. When they took her off, it slowly went away.
The doctor did mention to us that DKA can hit w/in as little as an hour...especially w/ food poisoning or extreme vomitting. I still feel horrid about the whole thing.
Oh, Mark, that would be really cool if you posted that (those guidelines)...:)
Thanks again all, and God bless :)

Thanks for the update, it sounds like Eri is doing much better...and I am so relieved :). I hope she continues to improve from here and there won't be any more incidents any time soon.
I'm also glad you were able to get a little rest and some food yourself. We don't want you getting sick now! Take care of yourself too :)
Give her a big hug from me :) and tell her to get well soon!

Hey Robin, WOW like Eri and all of you haven't been through enough rough times. The Doc's should have put her on Lantus and Humalog ages ago instead of fooling around with those other Insulins. I only had food-poisoning
once from a chicken dish at a restaurant in Toronto. Boy, I'll never forget that. Poor Eri... and Elle also. I never thought of food-poisoning from one of my favourite fruits.
I do hope and pray Eri recovers quickly and stays well for a long time. Enough is enough. You got an hours sleep. Good job. ;) I'm sure 48 hrs. sleep straight would be nicer. Hopefully you will get more than 1 hour soon and more to eat. Also hopefully, the Lantus and Humalog will do the job for her but if not at least she has the pump option. I know she's had the pump for a while, how come she wasn't put on it? Peaceful wishes to you all.
Take Care. :)
