Hi everyone! Just thought I'd introduce myself as a new person! I come from Swindon in England where I live with my boyfriend. I was diagnosed with T2 incorrectly by my doctor last summer but when the tablets stopped working and I moved to a different hospital I was confirmed as T1 and put on Novomix 30 pen.
Did anyone else have major problems remembering to take their injection to begin with? I've never been a very organised person and I almost keep forgetting I even have diabetes - not good! I feel a bit out of my depth with it all and my bs is still very high (last Hb1Ac was 12) because I just keep forgetting all about it as my symptoms aren't so bad now.
My diet is pretty bad too so I'm really not helping myself out much... thought if I could find a good forum I might be able to pick up some tips on how to take it all in when you're fairly new to it all and share some experiences....any one else had the same problem?
Sorry to drag on! Nice to 'meet' you all! *marianne* :)

Welcome to our world. You will have lots of questions and that is very normal. Yes we all have had times when we forgot about the shots or even that we had diabetes....after a while it will become old hate and you will fall into a routine...

Hi Marianne, nice to "meet" you.
I'm T2 - was diagnosed almost a year ago, and I've found this forum to be incredibly helpful.
Like Belinda said, you will eventually get into a routine - but I really think you need to find some way of reminding yourself to take your injections, because your bs is really high at the moment. Do you have a watch with an alarm that you could set, or even your mobile phone (not sure if they have alarms LOL, but it's an idea!!) Or maybe just buy a cheap alarm clock and put it somewhere that you'll hear it go off when you need to inject.
By the way, I'm just down the road from you - I live near Wantage, Oxfordshire.
Hope you'll stick around - this really is a great place to make friends and learn about diabetes

I sometimes have trouble forgetting to take an injection or fogetting I've taken one and then taking it a second time. One thing that has helped me with this problem is using the Accu-Chek Complete meter. Now, as soon as I take insulin, I record it in the meter and when I review the memory, I'll know quickly if I've taken it or not. You can also do the same with the OneTouch UltraSmart and the Freestyle Tracker. There may be others, too, but I'm not sure.

:) Hi Marianne and welcome.
You have come to a great forum where people care and are always willing to give advice where needed. I am T2 since Sept 2004 and on tablets so I can't help you with remembering to take your insulin but I often forget to take my tablets. I find if I take them at the same time each day I remember better.

Hi Marianne (another UK peep :) lol) and Welcome to the forums... I am T1 myself, but there are many T2's around :)
I have also forgotten to inject, on more than one occasion... it happens! But further down the road you do get into a routine and its like second nature.
Welcome again and See ya around! :)

Hi *marianne*! & Welcome to the group!
 on your misdiagnosis!
I've forgotten to take shots or bolus at times, and boy, my body doesn't like it. I think Lg made a good point about having a meter with the capability for review like that. There are other possibilities out there, too...(i.e. alarm watches for when to take meds; if going on pump therapy, or interested, they have alarms on some of them as well to remind users to bolus, etc..).
Here's hoping you make many new friends, learn lots and share your experiences as well. Once again, welcome and glad you're here.

Welcome Marianne! This is a great place to hang out and learn. I'm T1 m'self for going on 14 years. Just Monday evening I forgot my Lantus shot until around 11:30. That's pretty unusual for me, but it does happen once in a while. The idea of an alarm or something is probably a good one to help you remember until it becomes a matter of habit. Hope we'll see you around often!

Welcome :)
This forum is like a family to me and I really think we all do care about each other. I hope you will stick around and become a part of it. ;)
As far as taking your insulin, when do you take it? Is it before every meal? If so, what you can do is not let yourself eat something w/o taking your insulin first. So when meal time comes around your first instinct will be to inject. Or perhaps you can set up your schedule to test and then inject before meals. Like others have said, getting into a routine makes things easier. You will be less likely to forget to do important things (like taking insulin) and it will help you achieve better control. We all forget to do things at times, so dont be too hard on yourself, but remember that forgetting all the time is ultimatly hurting yourself.
Good luck and hope to see you around ;)

Welcome, Marianne! :)
The idea of an alarm or something is probably a good one to help you remember until it becomes a matter of habit.
Great advice. When I was first diagnosed T1, I walked around sounding like Big Ben. Little alarms were beeping their heads off in my purse, on my wrist, on my waist, on the meter, lol. It really did help a bunch until I could get into some sort of pattern/habit.
Glad you found this place. Buncha really nice people here.

Thank you all for the warm welcome and great advice!! I will definately be setting some alarms to try and get into more of a routine!....I'll keep you posted on how that goes....would also just like to say how great this forum seems to be - I wish I'd found it sooner as it's making me feel a lot more posotive! :D
...nice to see some 'locals' on here too! Do any of you know more about pump use in the UK as I haven't heard much about it - what are the criteria to be able to have one?!
Hope you all have a good day

Welcome :)
As far as taking your insulin, when do you take it? Is it before every meal? If so, what you can do is not let yourself eat something w/o taking your insulin first. So when meal time comes around your first instinct will be to inject.
I've been told for now to take it twice a day - once before breakfast and once before evening meal. The first problem is that I've never really eaten breakfast since I was a child (bad I know!) and so I have to remember to even eat first thing! The reason I probably have trouble remembering in the evening is because we never seem able to eat at a set time!! My b/f commutes 160 miles round trip to and from work so doesn't get back until about 9.00pm (11pm on Thursdays) but on his days off in the week we eat whenever he's hungry! His eating patterns aren't great so I find it hard to get meal times organised....sounds like a whole bunch of excuses! I'm hoping to get everything more organised soon though as we are both going to be working in the same area from Monday when I start my new job and will eventually move there once our tennancy is up on our current apartment.
I will definately try harder to put my insulin routine at the front of my mind at meal times though - I guess as everyone's said, I'll soon find it becomes a habit! I think I just need to get out of the mind-set that it will just go away.....
Wow I'm waffling on really badly!! Just it's great to be able to finally share all this with people who understand it all! :)

Yes.. perfectly normal to forget, like all the others have said, you will fall into a routine. It becomes a bit easier.
