Hello to all of you!
I just recently, as of last week, have been diagnosed with type two diabetes. A friend showed me the way here to your forum. I have so many questions and feel so lost right now. I am to see a dietitian next week and that may answer a lot of questions. Right now my doctor has me on a very low dose of glipizide and testing twice daily. My BS seems to be highest before breakfast but lowers through out the day. Before breakfast my BS will be 150 to 175 but at my second testing, about 4PM, my BS will be 114 to 130. My biggest confusion is where are my numbers supposed to be? I know that the fasting number is high but what about the rest? Yes, I will be talking to my doctor but in the meantime what are acceptable numbers?
Thanks,
Micheál

Welcome Mike. I am a Type 1 so my advice is a bit skewed...I aim for fasting sugars at about 120, but I have been known to let lower sugars stay that way for a while (under controlled conditions). A "normal" person should be about 70-80 fasting...but that is changing with more research.

Anyway, the Type 2's (and that Type 1 riff-raff) will be along shortly to welcome you. One word of advice--No question is too dumb to ask, and it may save your life.

Welcome Michael! You'll find everybody here is friendly and happy to help, so ask away. I think we're all overwhelmed at first. Your docs are there to help you but you'll find most of the day to day managment of this will be in your hands so knowledge is the key. It's better if your numbers are in the 80-110 range but personally I have a hard time doing that; I shoot for 100-150, but some would say that's too high. I hope you'll visit often and make some new friends!

Welcome :)

This is a great site and there are so many wondeful people here... I hope you will get to know us :)

As far as what range you want to be in...I think there is some differing opinions. I personally try to stay under 200, preferably under 150 (though not always possible:( ) but I do the best I can. I would ask your CDE or doctor where you should be.

Hope to see you around :)

Welcome Michael! My fasting glucose is usually about 103 to 110, but my
doctor said the range should be 70 to 99. It may have something to do with
the dawn phenomenon.

I hope you find everyone here as friendly and helpful as I've found them to be. Good luck with your diabetes!

Hi Micheál, Welcome to the Forums. Give yourself time to learn it takes everyone time to get a handle on it. As for your question about numbers about four years ago I was given the target for fasting of <130 and 2 hour post meals of <120. Why your doctor has you testing at 4PM I have no idea. My CDE asked that we test four times a day three days a week, but for the first year I checked 4 times a day every other day. Which was more for disiplining myself and trying to figure out how different foods affected me.

Hello Michael and welcome to this wonderful place! :)

I know how lost you must feel at the moment. A bit cliché perhaps but take one day at a time. This forum is a great place to vent by the way

I'm T2, on meds. I was told my numbers should be as follows :

Fasting sugars, under 7 mmol/L (125 mg/dl for you) but between 5 and 6 (90 and 110 for you) would be awesome. I'm always under 7 but I have seldom gone under 6. I suffer from what you call 'dawn phenomenon'.

Before meals, under 7 mmol/L; and

Two hours after a meal, under 7 mmol/L again. That is harder to achieve for me, especially after supper. I avoid pasta, bread, rice, and potatoes at supper time... or have very little of it. I simply have those earlier in the day, at breakfast and lunch. I'm very active during the day, carbs affect me less when I have them earlier in the day.

Exercise plays an important role in my glucose control. In my humble opinion, what you eat (or don't eat!) is just part of it...

Take good care now!

Hi Michael!

I just joined up here yesterday! Just wanted to say that I know how you're feeling - I've been T1 since the end of last year and I'm still trying to get my head round the new routine - you sound like you're well on track to getting it all under control....from what I've seen there's something new to learn about it everyday!

Anyway, best of luck for the dietician appointment and getting it all sorted! :)
