I am struggling to understand how my sugars work. Here's the problem. This morning I went for a walk came back and my b/s was 4.8...excellent. Had my breakfast within 50 g of carb. Two hours later my sugars were 7.2 still ok for a 2hr post. An hour later they were 7.5 and by lunch they were 10.2...not good. not even by a long shot. Supper comes and they are 9.2 and so I make sure that there isn't much carb with this meal. I check at 8pm when I take my lantus and it's back to 4.8. Great, however it's now midnight and I haven't eaten anything to put my sugars up but they're back to 10. What am I doing wrong? I thaught that with the walking the sugars were great (I was testing less) but obviously they weren't.

I don't go to clinic for two more weeks and every one was away today at a conference so there was no help there. It's pretty frustrating when you're doing what you're supposed to and you think you're achiveing good control but you find out that your not. I would so very much appreciate it is anyone could please explain what's happening or what I'm doing wrong. Sorry to go on and on but I'm VERY FRUSTRATED! Thanks

liz32,

Sounds to me like you are not getting enough basal insulin. Increase your Lantus and your between-meal blood sugars should improve. But you may need to have a snack before your walk.

You mentioned in a previous post that you are on both metformin and Lantus. Be aware that Lantus acts throughout the day. Which is why you may need some carbs before exercise. You don't want to go low.

Cheers,

Mark ;)

liz32,

The way I check my basal level is to take my Lantus at normal time and then monitor for the next 16-18 hours with nothing to eat  .

If, during a normal day, my B/G stays within the acceptable range, I know that the basal amount is correct. If, however, the #s are running too low, then basal is too much. If #s are running too high, then basal is too low.

This is my method, I don't know that it'll work for you, but my worst A1c has been 5.7 using this method. Standard A1c has been 5.6.

it sounds like a good idea, I just don't know if I could go 16-18 hours with out eating...very busy with small children...crazy schedual..I may have to suck it up and do it though because all of a sudden my sugars are going a little crazy and make absolutely no sense. thanks
