Good Morning All;
Back in March my Dr. said I had diabetes and prescribed Metformin (sp?) 500 mg 2xday. Didnt tell me type 1 or 2. I dont know a thing about diabetes, so this will be a new journey for me.
Yes I am much over weight, but am bringing it down steadily and slowly.
Hoping that weight loss will control this thing.
Need diet (nutritian) advise. Will explore this site.
Seems like a good place to hang out and learn how to deal with this thing.
Have to go now, but wanted to stick my head in the door and say hello.
Regards to all
Hal

Hal,
Welcome to our little family...that's always growing (a good sign  ) . This is a good place to be and I hope you find that yourself.
From what you have posted, I'm guessing you are type 2 being that you are on meds, and are trying to lose weight (though some of us Type 1s also are struggling with weight issues). Exercise and diet are two great ways for Type 2s to control their diabetes...not easy, but effective ;) . Getting into the routine of working out daily and eating well is really going to help you in the long run. Hopefully, your doctor and diabetes team is helping you, especially since you are just starting out.
Well, please feel free to post frequently with your comments, questions, or just to chit chat :D . I look forward to seeing your posts.

Welcome to the Type 2 club. From my experience the more your weight comes off the easier it will be for the medication to keep you stable.
You will find stacks if information if you play with the Search button. There is a wealth of experience on this forum regarding how long it takes to stabilise, side effects from Metformin, exercise, snacking etc.
Anything you want to know just ask and someone, somewhere will try and help.
Good Luck

I knew this would be a great place. I read some of the posts before logging in. Thank you.
I called the Dr's office and found out that I was type 2. I don't know if I should be annoyed with my Dr or not. But he prescribed Metformin 500 2/day and said "Check back in 3 or 4 mo." No diet, no educational material, etc etc.
I must admit, that I was not too alarmed by the diagnosis. The Doc didn't seem too upset by the blood test. And his reaction was not too extreme. Kinda like watching the flight attendants on a plane. When they get upset then I worry. I could change Doc's, but since my wife works at Yale University, I am served by the Yale Medical Services. So to change Doc would be like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.
What I have been doing is avoiding obvious sugars, pasta, potatoes, breads, you know all the things I like. I have been eating oatmeal & raisins for breakfast 3 or 4 times a week. Mid morning snack of 4 or 5 oz of salmon fillet.
Lunch is usually cup/bowel of Yankee been, or lentil, or pea soup. Dinner varies, but frequently chicken and steamed veggies. I would really like to find a good menu section that I could study. I have been avoiding fruits cuz I am worried about fructose.
I will explore this site because I want to find out what resources are available to me here. However, if anyone has any recommendations please don't hesitate to mention them to me.
Again thank you all for the nice soft landing you made for me
Regards
Hal

You say that changing doc's is like rearraning deck chairs on the titanic...you may go down with the ship if you don't get good care. I was diagnosed in january of this year with T2 and am taking metformin two times daily but only 250 because I can't tolerate the side effects...they are severe for me. I also inject lantus...it's a slow release insulin (over roughly 24 hrs). I've already had three sets of blood work at the lab and clinics and consults and the like.
What were your sugars like when the doc dx you? Do you check your sugars daily? Please don't be afraid to eat fruit...they are great...like most foods if eaten in a balanced day. Some are higher in carbohydrates than othes so keep that in mind. Most of us count our carbohydrates and have a daily amount. I eat under 200 grams of carb in the run of a day. I do 50g and breakfast, 60-70 and lunch and 50-60 at supper. It can depend on the type of day I've had. The other big thing is regular excercize..a good brisk walk or the like will help you keep you b/s in good control and well as it being good for you. Anyways, don't want to overload ya...too late! hope this helps you some. I would get more infor from your doc..actually I'd demand it :whistling

Hi Seabee !!!!!! Welcome to the family. I'm sure that you will find alot of help and resources here. I am a T1 and have met alot of interesting people here. Just remember one thing: When we give advice, that's just what it is, ADVICE. What may work for one or two of us may not work for all. We are here for advice and support. Keep coming back and post often. It doesn't have to be serious posts. A good deal of the time, the posts some of us make are just humorous cause you gotta have humor to go on. :D
