why do i have to have two injections of insulin a day and also take metformin as well, what is the reason for this any ideas many thanks kath_uk

Kath, what kind of insulin are you taking, and at what times? That will help answer...

I take metformin and lantus. The metformin helps to keep my liver from producing sugar this helps with control and met as the lantus insulin. Does this help?

duck im on novomix 30 i have one injection in the morning and one in the evening i thought that insulin would have been enough without any tablets, thanks for replying kath_uk

If I remember right, metformin reduces your body's resistance to Insulin. I don't know much about insulin shots as I'm not on them personally.. but I am going to assume that you are on both because the type of insulin you are taking is perhaps considered a 'weaker' type?

What is metformin?
• Metformin is used to regulate blood glucose (sugar) levels. Metformin works in three ways: first, it reduces the amount of glucose produced by your liver; second, it reduces the amount of glucose absorbed from food through your stomach; and third, it makes the insulin that your body produces work better to reduce the amount of glucose already in your blood.

Okay...Seems to me that you are taking insulin because maybe in addition to not being able to use insulin effectively, your body may not be producing enough insulin either, hence the need for the two shots. Being on both shots and oral drugs is actually not that unusual, one must do what they need to do to keep this disease in check.

Do you test often? I'd be curious to know how your blood sugars are day to day...
