Does anyone else here get totally erratic blood sugars during that time of the month??

I've been having perfect control of my bg lately. But then I go and get my period and my levels go completely nuts!... totally and uterly off whack!
Mainly my bg is just too high, but then every now and agian it takes a dramatic drop and I have a bad hypo that feels 100xs worse than normal. I seem to loose all sense of what my sugar levels are doing so have to test more often, I feel low when i'm high and high when I'm low.

Before I was diagnosed I didn't get too affected by Pms at all really, but now I just feel sick, bad headaches, stomach feels like a bombs gonna go off and i'm 'always' hungry!.. and I have zero energy :(

Is it normal to have such a change in my blood sugar just when it's that time off the month??.. am I the only one?

... I experience a slight rise, perhaps from 6.5 to 7.5. Ok, it's not huge rise but the difference is BG will plateau there and won't move, until the 5th or 6th day. Usually I enjoy levels between 4.9 and 6.5. I feel ****, my mood is ****, and I crave sugar.

My sugars go into the 200's during the week prior. Then I tend to be a little on the low side for a few days once it starts. My CDE says this is quite normal for most women.

For cramps and such I find that Naproxen Sodium works wonders. The OTC version is called Aleve, and then there's generics available too.

Yes this is very common. You can either experience highs or lows due to all them crazy hormones bouncing around during this time.

I have some weird fluctuations the week prior as well. Sometimes, my blood will go high to low, etc... or sometimes it will stay on the low side or high side. On the day it starts, I sometimes will get very very sick, or sometimes won't feel ill at all. At and around that time, I'm also consistently hungry, tired, and nothing seems to satisfy (the only thing I don't seem to get are headaches!). These are the things I hate about being a woman, (and Diabetic) LOL! ;) :whistling

My "friend" (more like enemy  ) really does a number on my system too. Either I'm always having to use the bathroom, not to pee :whistling:, or I can't go . I also used to get killer cramps that had me doubled over in pain... I was put on birth control b/c the doctor thought it would help regulate it and make it more bearable. It did help for a while, but then I stopped taking b/c and now it seems like I feel better when I'm not taking it. Very strange, huh?

As for sugars, I never can tell how they are going to be. Usually, they'll be a little elevated before, but this isn't always the case. Sometimes there isn't really any noticable difference. I wish I could be able to predict that they are going to be high (or low or whatever the case might be) so I could adjust for it, but I have no such luck:( .

It's so unfair that guys don't have to deal with any of this...they definitely were dealt the easier hand. Oh well, I guess dealing with our monthly cycle is just one of the joys of being a woman :D

Uh, let me join in on the rant...it stinks! My bg's go haywire. No matter how high I raise my insulin levels, it's never enough. I usually raise them from average 0.65/hr to 0.95/hr and still sit in the 300's....very annoying! It usually occurs w/me the week before but not always and I never know what it's going to do. I've worked w/my CDE extensively but nothing has worked thusfar.

Andrea, my friend and I started calling our "friend" a "relative"...usually shows up unannounced and is a pain to deal with... Bad I know...but the name has stuck lol. :whistling

Amanda,

LOL :D You are so right! "Relative" is so much more fitting than "friend"...because like I said, many times it's anything BUT friendly :(

Wow....sounds like we have the same "relative" ...isn't it a pain? Usually, my period is unpredictable. I mean it comes every twenty-something days, but I can't pinpoint it...which is very annoying . Then my blood sugar can range from normal to high to sometimes even low...I just never can tell. All I know, is that when I do get it...it really bums me out that I am going to have to deal with it for tne next 5-7 days :( .

Oh LORDY!!! I have all that to look forward to w/Eri???!!!? ....and they say her BG's are out of control now???!!!?
HOPEFULLY, the docs are right in guesstimating that she is still about 2 yrs away from that...but one never knows...

Throws me out of whack too. Week before, I run higher than normal and can't quite compensate with extra insulin. Once I start, my bs vary greatly from high to lows within hours. I'm exhausted and always hungry-especially for sweets and salty foods. Of course, I indulge because it makes me feel a bit better during this miserable time.

Wow I guess I am one of the luckier ones...I don't get sick, just a day of cramps which is cured by two doses of 4 ibuprofen (one in am and one at around noon). I do see the day prior too a rise in BS but fortunately I can pinpoint it to almost a day or two. It shows up and leaves. To me it is just a hassle but not a problem.( Hassle being having to deal with going to the bathroom more often :whistling )

Hey girls...
I have to share this "unwanted" event with all of you. I had been experiencing Amenorrhea (no period) since last year. It shows up and then disappears for months. Well, it decided to come along right after Katrina. Now my BS has never been this high is a REAL long time. I was at 278 corrected and shortly after was even higher at 334. I decided to take a shot. It worked and I even changed my set, just in case. No how will I know that my pump is working correctly and it not the shot I took? Do I wait till the length of the shot of insulin wears out?......The joys of being a diabetic woman!!!

Yes We can complain!!! :girl: I have been getting this visit since I was 11, so that's 25 years and will most likely have another 15 to 20 years. It has gotten worse since my daughter was born 4 years ago. Causes me all kinds of blood sugars swings, plus cravings, pain and everything else. :s:

Mine just go up a little higher, I take a couple units more, thankfully, nothing serious with me. Now if I get an illness that causes a fever....that can be bad to get sugars under control. Thankfully, last time was 2003 Christmas.
Fun!
