CK Enzyme, need feedback asap

Hi all

I've been getting bloodtest back with an elevated CK Enzymine (400-500) for the past 2 tests.

I dropped the statin drug as that's the usual cause and still have a high result.

The Dr says that there a few things that can cause it and now wants more tests done.

Yes, I'm tired and have no energy. (fatigue?)

I need more info.

How big a deal is this?

What do I need to know?

Any suggestions?

Also, now I found that the Actos can cause tired and lack of energy.

Can this cause a high CK level?

How do I figure out which is the problem? I need the Actos to control the diabetic blood levels, so can't just stop taking it.

I also take the Glyburide, but a small amount can drop my levels alot.

Reasons for elevated CK Enzyme

muscle injury, including heavy gym workouts

intramuscular injections

overheating

medication effects, such as AZT or other nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors

autoimmune illness.

I have a book that I will have to look thru a bit more and let you know any other info I find.

CK is mainly used to screen for disorders of cardiac and skeletal muscle. Unfortuantely so many things can cause an elevated CK level that it is seldom useful alone other than as a general screening tool. As your doctor has said further tests will be needed to pinpoint the cause. One thing they will probably do is CK isoenzymes which is more specific on the source of the CK activity.

Statin drugs can be mycotoxic and if everything else seems to normal then my money is on that. Do you by chance have any other results?

No, I don't have much info yet.

Hopefully we'll do the bloodtest and have more info shortly.

Just found out this has been going on (higher enzymines) since last summer.

Also, I wasn't on the statin till the fall.

Can the Actos cause this?

CK level as I understand it should be around 0-55, my historic level is about 200-250. When I was on Crestor for only 6 weeks, my level went up above 2700. Stay off the Statin Drugs, but there are so many other issues as Jason has mentioned.

Looks like it can, wouldn't have guessed it but looked it up anyways. Sounds rare but worth looking into.

CPK Levels: During required laboratory testing in clinical trials, sporadic,
transient elevations in creatine phosphokinase levels (CPK) were observed.
An isolated elevation to greater than 10 times the upper limit of normal was
noted in 9 patients (values of 2150 to 11400 IU/L). Six of these patients continued
to receive ACTOS, two patients had completed receiving study medication
at the time of the elevated value and one patient discontinued study
medication due to the elevation. These elevations resolved without any
apparent clinical sequelae. The relationship of these events to ACTOS therapy
is unknown.

The lab I used to work in, the "normal" range for CK levels in adult males was 40-240 U/L. Of course each lab should determine its own reference range.
