I don't think that it is a daft question at all...I'm sure others have wondered the same thing. To answer your question, I think there are a variety of reasons why people range from 1 injection to up to 4 or more. Sometimes it has to do with the type of insulin you are on, sometimes it's a matter of trying to keep tight control, and I'm sure there are other reasons as well. For someone on Lantus, he or she might have to take an injection of it either in the morning or evening (or sometimes both), then also cover meals with a short-acting insulin. Sometimes taking only one injection isn't enough to keep blood sugar in range and in that situation, taking another injection or two is needed.

I know this is kind of a simplistic answer, but I hope it clears things up a little. I'm sure others here could help explain things too.

I take metformin and inject lantus. The metformin suppresses my liver so it doesn't put out more glucose..I was on this first. Then I started on the lantus..I injest that once a day as a basal dose of insulin. So far my sugars have good but it looks like I might have to start with a short acting insulin to cover my supper. Each of us has a different regime to follow. This is what works for me. I hope this answers your question. I have one of my own..what does "mdi" mean? I've heard it around here and have no idea what it means.

Hey Kath....

I'm a T 1 and find so much better control in splitting up my doses, originally 2, to 4.
