I just tested my sister (non-diabetic) and niece (non diabetic) with my freestyle and I got 145 for her and she got 128. I coded my machine
afterwards and it was fine. Doesn't this seem a bit high? What is the normal blood sugar value for a non-diabetic?

I have had to test mine 4 times a day while carlye is on the trial and mine has yet to be over 120, for the most part I stay right near 116 even right after eating oreo cookies. When I am starving it is in the 80s.
It's been alluded to a few times here, but the "medical profession" at some point will have to redefine what "normal" is. I think right now the assumption is "normal" people are at about 70 all day long, but I always asked "based on what?" because I have never seen a study or parameters for a study of a population and how that population faired. Many of us here are probably closer to "normal" than we have been lead to believe.

I'm not diabetic (but sometimes hypoglycemic) and mine is anywhere from 70-120 ... 120 after eating and 70 in the morning. I used my bg to make sure the tester is working with new strips.
From what I have read, if you get a reading OVER 140 more than twice then you are pre-diabetic... even after eating it shouldn't be over 140-145. So one test can't really tell anything.. you have to test them at least twice a different times of the day. I got that info from Diabetics for Dummies :)
Great book by the way!

When did you test them? if it was just after a meal then I think those readings are ok. I tested my mum once after a meal to compare what she was to me... and hers was 153 (8.5)... I was concerned so we tested her agian an hour later and she was 93 (5.2).. and that was after a big meal and a huge chucnk of chocolate cake.
Another time I tested her and she was 68 (3.8)... straight after again a huge meal... but she's not hypo or diabetic... just odd :p
I'm not really sure if a non diabetic should ever be that high without just having food though.

They had not eaten since lunch and I tested them aounr 6 pm. I was really more worried about my sister's reading than my niece @128.

We were told that for a non diabetic, and occational high/low is not a concern, but two highs (above, i think it was, 130) or two lows below 70 in a row in a 24 hour period on a normal day (meaning you haven't delibertly starved yourself or over indulged on cotton candy and cool aid) is cause for futher testing by a doctor.
but the specifics were, 2 low/high in a row within a 24 hour period.
Good luck and lets hope neither turn out diabetic.

It's perfectly normal for a non-diabetic to have a reading of 145 after eating. Within an hour after eating, the blood sugar level should return to about 90. A reading of 145 on an empty stomach should be of a bit of concern, but nothing worth panicking over. :) It's always best to get a doc's opinion when in doubt.

Thanks for all the responses, and yes she had eaten lunch & dessert hours before this test (more than 2-3 hrs). I asked her to have a blood test done w/ her doctor, unfortunately I don't think she will :(

I was told anything above 120 - 130...that's why they said Elle was "pre-diabetic" b/c she had a few consistant higher readings(one being in the 300's)...and the other the high 130's and a 200. She's also gone low...but her HbA1c is always perfect when they test it(hasn't been tested in a while though!!!)
I go hypo...my lowest reading was 42 I believe...I started going low today...was on my dad's Harley for about 100miles...sun beating down...and no food in my belly except for an early breakfast...and this was around 230/3...I felt as if I was going to pass out and fall off the bike at one point...so stopped at the restaurant and had about 1/3 of a turkey sub and water...starting to get shakey and dizzy now...this is becoming more and more frequent...I guess I REALLY need my insurance to kick in soon!!!

No, I've never been labelled as diabetic...always just had the lows, but they never told me to do anything except to eat more smaller meals throughout the day...(was always borderline gestational diabetic, but never fully)...
Elle...they just say to keep an eye on her...so I check her at least once a month now...just about that time again...last time I checked, she was 118, so that was good :)

It might be worth mentioning here the current ADA / WHO criteria for the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus.
1. Symptoms of diabetes plus casual plasma glucose concentration 200 mg/dl (11.1 mmol/l). Casual is defined as any time of day without regard to time since last meal. The classic symptoms of diabetes include polyuria, polydipsia, and unexplained weight loss.
or
2. FPG 126 mg/dl (7.0 mmol/l). Fasting is defined as no caloric intake for at least 8 h.
or
3. 2-h postload glucose 200 mg/dl (11.1 mmol/l) during an OGTT. The test should be performed as described by WHO, using a glucose load containing the equivalent of 75 g anhydrous glucose dissolved in water.
In the absence of unequivocal hyperglycemia, these criteria should be confirmed by repeat testing on a different day. The third measure (OGTT) is not recommended for routine clinical use.
