my sister has had diabetes for many years but during the last 12 months things have got worse
she says she has always had plenty of energy but from the time she gets up in the morning she feels exhausted. she can hardly get dressed.
she says she has a good diet and cant understand why she is like it.
Can anyone help please? any info will be great. :)
How are her blood sugar readings? When was her last A1c/what was it?

Does your sister have type one diabetes? If so, she may want to ask her doctor to test her thyroid levels. There is a form of autoimmune thyroid disease (underactive) that occurs sometimes in type 1 diabetics that could explain the symptoms she is having.
It is an easy thing to manage, at least compared to the diabetes, and the prescription drug to treat it is inexpensive, so I consider it the least of my worries. :)

... Even if she's diabetic, it doesn't mean it's related to diabetes. It could be anything! The best advice would be for your sister to go see her doctor and very soon. It's not normal to be exhausted when you've just got up in the morning.
The very best to your sister!

I felt like that all the time until my sugars leveled out when I got on my pump... I agree with the above post, she needs to go see a doc and try to figure whats going on..

I also agree that the first thing that should be checked out are her blood sugar levels. Being at either extreme, high or low, can make you feel a complete lack of energy. It may be that she is bouncing around too much and that can make you feel tired and weak...her treatment plan may need to be addressed. If blood sugar control is not the problem, it might be a good idea to see her doctor and get checked out...even run some blood work. There are a lot of different things that can cause you to feel that way.
Keep us posted ;)
She might have Mono. Or is she maybe depressed? Or like others have said it could be the thyroid, or the wonky control of this silly disease we call diabetes. Just get her to go to the doctor!

Have your sister see her doctor about this. It could be any number of things.
1. It could be her bg levels (ie: highs/lows)
2. It could be her thyroid. That can be detected through bloodwork.
3. She could possible be anemic.
Her doctor should be consulted and tests run. Let us know how she does. Also, Welcome to the family. :D

i too agree about the thyroid, iam hypothyroid as alot diabetics are, i have recently noticed my energy levels to lower than what they used to, i chalk it up to stress , kids, medications i am on, and my age catching up to me once the 20's are gone it starts getting to you, also over 20 years of being t1 i'm factors in to the mix.

type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease. For some reason those of us who have one autoimmune disease often will get another at some point. I have Graves disease as well as type 1 diabetes. Graves is a HypER active thyroid disease which affects not only the thyroid but the eyes (TEDs' - thyroid eye disease) and the muscular system and nervous systems. Graves is easily treated with several treatment options, for me I had a total thyroidectomy and take Synthroid everyday.
I am very healthy and active, but have dealt with the physical exhaustion and worn out muscles, constant fatigue of thyroid disease. It makes a person want a nap just about all the time, even just after waking. It also makes the arms and legs feel heavy as if they are too weak to perform. It can affect weight and moods. UNTREATED it will affect blood sugar levels and create and endocrine nightmare.

If these symptoms are what your sister is experiencing simply blood tests can identify the problem but many endos are reluctant to run complete tests. She will need an Free T4, a Free T3, a A TSI antibodies, and TSH run, Free T-4 tells you how much actual thyroid your body is making, Free T-3 is how much you are using, TSI is the thyroid antibodies that can interfere with your thyroid and TSH is a pitulutary hormone that tells your body when to make thyroid and when to stop.
If thyroid is her problem, whether HypER or HypO, it can easily be fixed and she will feel much better soon.
