Give yourself a month to get used to it...Thinking like your pancreas is kinda a weird thing. Once you get your basals sorted out, you're about 75% of the way home. Then the insulin to carb ratio is important too. Then you'll need to sort out how different foods break down for you. Using a fast-acting analog to be a basal is different than Lantus or NPH.

But remember not to ever freak out. Test a lot. If in doubt, TEST. If not in doubt, TEST. And we're here to help as much as possible.

Congratulations Cinnabon!

Watch the video through a few times before you go to your training, and play around w/the buttons. Like Duck said, give yourself about a month to get use to it. You'll do great!!

Definite  to you for getting your pump! Here's wishing you good luck tomorrow, and please keep us posted along the way. As far as what to expect, it may be hard to say, as each person is so different. However, I think the others gave good pointers:

1. Give your body time to adjust
2. Test, test, (you guessed it...) test
3. Don't give up, even if it doesn't work out right away...
4. Ask All the questions you can

Here's hoping you have great experiences as you start pump therapy with your new "friend!" :D

Cinnabon, did I scare you away? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v151/educk/smilies/jammern.gif

I forgot about the sleeping-in thing...I forgot that I used to have to wake up and eat or else I could have bad things happen. Sigh, how nice to forget!

Cinnabon~ Congrats on the new pump. Like you, I know nothing about pumping. But, from what I've read, you're going to love it once it's all set up and purring. :)

I agree... I got my MM 515 at the end of January and it has changed my life... no longer am I on a set schedule... I can when I want to and not when my insulin tells me too.

I sleep better than pre-pump also..

It will be a little scary at first, but I think the MM pump is very easy to use and I love the Easy Bolus... input your BG, input your carb intake for that meal, it will give you a 'recommended' dose, you can alter it if you want, then it will ask you how long you want to wait before checking your BG, and then at the specified time... it will beep at you to remind you to check your BG... I love it..

That feature is NOt "Easy Bolus", Clint; it's the "Bolus Wizard".

its actually really easy. The manual shows you how to compute your basal rate, carb ration, etc...

After I read the manual and talked to my dr, I knew how to set it up, but I waited until my trainer showed up.

Are you sure you were supposed to be instructed today? I recieved my pump about 2 weeks before I was instructed and then I wasn't instructed at home I had to go to the DR office.

Cinnabon
06-10-2005, 12:30 PM
Yes , the way they explained it to me was that the pump would be delivered by a rep., teach me, and install it. I did find it kinda fast though. I have not received the tubes, cannulas, and needles.

actually, the way it worked for me... I got the pump, and 2 days later on MM called me with the number to the pump trainer in my area. I had to call and make an appt with her, that was about a week off, she came to the house, showed me everything, and set me up with insulin to start out with. this is to give you time to use the cd rom that came with the pump, it takes about an hour and a half, and it's a complete lesson, once that is done, the trainer comes in hooks ya up, usually with saline for the first week, then once your comfertable, she starts you with insulin. I being the worlds biggest over achiver tho,... know more about the pump then she did, and started on insulin the first day, and have not heard from her after the first day.....

but the real best teacher out there, is that cd rom that comes with the pump system. it explains everything and has interactive tests also.....

Good to hear everything went good for you Midnite. I finally received all the other supplies. I will begin calling everyone again on Monday. The only answer they had for me was that they were under the impression that the supplycpmany would send a rep out with the pump. Unless the Fed ex delivery guy was the instructor!!

Cinnabon,

I am also with MM so as middnite said the pump arrives and then MM calls to set up an instructor within your area. Using saline was never an option with my instructor, matter of fact I have never heard of such a thing until I joined this forum. I was put straight on insulin. That instructor also worked with me afterwards to help me set my basals. SO you might want to ask after your training if your still supposed to keep in contact with the instructor.

Back when I got my 508, I went to training before I got it...Then I had specific training when I got it. I never had a MM trainer, I used the same CDE that my endo sent me to in order to decide if I was capable and motivated enough for a pump...

My Smith's trainer called me today. We're playing phone tag now.

Cinnabon, that is great news. Once you get your basals down and your carb:insulin ratios down you will love your pump.

The first thing my boss noticed about a week after I got my pump was I had more energy than he did.

You will feel so much better that it will change things you never knew you wanted to change.

Have a great time pumping!!!

I'm a couple of months in on my MM 715 and love it. It is revolutionary. I too went straight to insuling (no saline). I convinced my endo I didn't need no stinkin' saline, watched the video and then showed my CDE how to use the pump. She was impressed.

Every once in a while now, I get the Pavlovian Dog syndrome and sit down at the old MDI station thinking I have to inject. Then I remember that is no longer necessary. WAY COOOOOOOL.

Good Luck. You will love the lifestyle changes.

I have everything with me, I have been waiting for a trainer since Monday. Now they tell me that the RN agency that was assigned to me, did not have anyone certified in pump training. Now I am awaiting another agency to take over.... talk about a verbal workout!!! (POW!.. right in the kissa')

Cinnabon, if you have been diabetic for 22 years I think with pump school online and your own experiances you can get up and running by your self. but only if your comfortable with it. That's what I did, also this forum has been great help.

Ok.....
The RN finally showed up. She had ordered the 3 ml reservoirs pre-filled. The reservoirs I got were empty. I could have saved time by getting this info form her ahead of time, but that didnt happen. Filled out all my paperwork. Orders had to be called in to my mulch head Endo along with the insulin (Novolog) Rx.

Wait! it gets better, when I call his office to hurry up this process, his nurse asks me;
"but don't you have insulin?"

Me: "What? Yea, I have R & N"

Nurse:"Oh that's fine"

Me:"Ummmmm, NEGATIVE!!! NO ITS NOT"

Is she high, hormonally challenged, or is she just sleeping with the Endo?

I got this part squared off, but I will continue in this Loooooong journey. My Instructor must come back because I must show her I can do it (like the lil engine that could" then I will receive a "RELEASE"!?

Daddy-O,
I know I agree, but my insurance will not continue to supply me if I don't get that approval of completing the pump course.

:stupid: Never heard of prefilled reservoirs. Does that have anything to do with the model you are using?

I don't think they have the prefilled out yet, but I thought they were working on that.

Cinnabon. I sure hope you have some energy left after you get done jumping through all those hoops. Also I took my certificate, that I got online after completeing the pump school, To the doc she was satified. Mabeye you should try that with the insurance Co. they might buy that. It looks official.
Good luck and hang in there you made it this far, you'll get it done.

Well I finally got the doctor to send in the Rx for the Novolog at about 4 pm(all day calling) . I got my Rx and gave him a real treat and a mouthful. Don't get me wrong, I am VERY respectful, but this is just way too much. All that’s left is meeting with my RN (got a few more visits also confirmed). Now tomorrow for those of you who have been following my trails, I see a retina specialist tomm and I can not miss that for ANYTHING! To be continued......

All I can make is:

Basal Rate 1.0 units hr.
Bolus rate: 10:1 .. after that I cant see a thing...

Thanks.. and the CHO stands for ?? (Carb./ ?/?.....

Unfortunately, I had to take Organic Chemistry...So, CHO=Carbon Hydrogen Oxygen, or CarboHydrate (a "hydrate" is an organic compound [organic being that it contains carbon] that has absorbed water--don't ask me why it's called a carbohydrate then since there is no water involved).

Protein has carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and a nitrogen "group" that makes it a protein...Don't ask me why they don't abbreviate protein "CHON" then...

BTW, I failed organic once or twice, so take this all with a grain of salt, or NaCl if you wish...

Cinnabon,

Speaking as someone who just returned to a pump after 5 years off, Everyone is right. I am about 1 month into it, and things are just now falling into place. There were times when I wanted to throw it through the window. Times when I changed my site, infusion set, or cartridge when I probably didn't need to. but hey, it is all good. I would add, purchase Pumping Insulin by John Walsh 3rd edition. When your training is done, this book will be a good referance and help. It covers almost everything.

...and to add my $.02...My Cozmore is making me NUTS!!!!!!! It's not the Cozmore, it's me, I know, since I am so accustomed to the way the 508 did things. But Monday AM I put in a new insertion set, and obviously it didn't take very well...My sugars were in the 260's most of the day at work unless I took a shot with my pen. Things have been better since I switched sites that night. So yeah, there will be a curve, but perserverance will pay off...for all of us.
