High, I am 27 years old, and very physically fit.
I eat healthy and try to take good care of myself.

I am finding that after going through some seizures in the past (always during sleep) that I am terrified to let this happen again and find myself running high in the night.

Taking insulin to combat a low, or what not is so dangerous... I have seen what can happen.

For now I wake myself up every couple of hours to check myself or just kinda see how I feel before going back to sleep (kinda dangerous I know - a test is best), but you can imagine what a Crankpot this has made me - getting up all the time and having a crappy sleep. But the alternative is to run a little high and feel like **** in the morning because you ran a high sugar for a long period of time..... Yuch! feels just as bad as you all know.

Right now, I take about 10 units of Ultralente each night (around 10:30-12:30) and then take my Novorapid with each meal.

Is anyone else using a basal shot like this at bedtime?
Do you find that it is covering your sugar adequately?
Sometimes I will find that the U is not enough to handle the peaking sugar levels that occur around maybe 6-7am, but I don't want to take more U because that will give me a stronger BASIL rate for the entire day, I don't need that...

I used to take a few units of N along with the U at bedtime, but I found that it would kick in too early and send me into the lows at around 3:00am and mess me up. I don't want to have to get up at 2-3am and give an N shot then if I don't have to....

Anyone have any tips for nightime dosing of Basil, Intermediate insulins to keep sugars under control? Sometimes I like to sleep in and it's nice to not have to get up at see a 16.0 sugar at 10am and have to use Novorapid to push it back down..... I hate that....

any advice would be great!

thanks,

kemist.

PS - The pump did not work out for me, so I've got to make this work with shots. - thanks....

If you cant return to a pump, have you considered Lantus? Its much less peaky and gives a more steady basal than UL. Two other thoughts: How long before UL kicks in and how long does it last for you? Maybe you could switch the UL shot to the morning, that is, if it takes a while to kick in and if it lasts long enough. Have you discussed with your doc?

Can't get Lantus in Canada... I am trying to see if a family member who travels to the US and back weekly, can get a bottle at the drug store....

how does it work in the US, can you just buy over the counter?
I don't mind paying the cash for it.

Also, I'm concerned that taking the UL in the morning would give me a much weakened strenght of the insulin come early morning time when I get those rising blood sugars... what would I do then.... take N i suppose?

Will have to discuss with Endo at some point, but I like to do things alot on my own....

Nope, Im afraid you need a script from your doc to get Lantus in the USA. I believe its to be released shortly in Canada. Taking UL in the morning and a little N before bed may be an interim solution.

Have you heard from anyone whether or not the UL actually lasts the full 24 hours? I wonder how well it retains its strenght...

Well only one way to find out... I'll let you know if I try it..
