Hello everyone,

I am new to all of this, diagnosis T1 only a couple of weeks ago, age 34. I "met" meech on the joinleenow site and he recommended I have a look here. Which was a great suggestion, thanks meech.

I am curious about something and have a quick question. Although I haven't been digging around in the internet for information for all that long, I get the impression that adult onset type 1 is relatively seldom in men compared to women. It seems that many if not most men with T1 get it when they are quite young. I have found instances of women getting this in their 30s and older but have found nada about men.

I could be off base, but wanted to ask the question- I'm not the only one out there, am I?

Thanks
Del

I got T1 when I was 17.5 years old, and I was treated like I was some kind of pariah--It may be "rare", but it happens, and there was nothing you could have done about it.

BTW, welcome!

Hi Del,

Welcome! I was diagnosed at the age of 22... the doctor looked at me like I was crazy when I told him that I thought I had symptoms of diabetes. ("too old.. yada yada") So... yes, it happens -- though, I don't know anything about a difference between genders.

I was dx'd when I was a bit older myself, at which point I was put on meds for being a type 2, and back then there were not many, after another 2 weeks, oops 600 + bs's. so back then it was unheard of being a type 1 at my age.... and was just treated as a type 2 (for about 2 weeks) and that was by a general practitioner. now from whaat I understand, it's more frequent to hear about type 1's at later ages.

Hi Del and welcome.

I guess I am just as big an oddity of nature like you ;) :D (of course I am just plain odd on sooooo many levels) ... male, diagnosed type 1 at age 35 (Feb 2004). I had always been healthy with no cronic conditions. BAM, outta nowhere.

I am not aware of any statistic, other than you and me!

But I think you are doing the right thing by learning and searching for information. Learning all I could and the great folks here have made a world of difference in my feeling better and taking control.

Keep it up!

I was 23 when I was diagnosed. Seems to me it is not that unusual judging by the results here. :) I think there is a much older crowd that call themselves type 1.5!

Hi, I was diagnosed T1 earlier this year - I'm 53 & male, so I'm an even rarer bird than you!!!

We are rare (odd, peculiar....) - my endocrinologist has only seen one other case like mine so far.

Just heard last week of someone else in late 40's diagnosed as T1, so maybe it's becoming "less rare"???

Personally, I don't think the medical profession has much of a clue about this disease. If you edu-ma-cated them in school by not calling it "juvenile" and "adult-onset" diabetes, they wouldn't look at you like you had a third eyeball in your head when you are diagnosed outside of your adolescent years.

"But--but--It's called juvenile diabetes! And you're not a juvenile!"

ya. I was dxd @ 24 and I am now 30... the drs at the time were baffled that I got it @ 24 and not at a younger age...

Well I was 20 I think when I was told I was type 1, however the ENDO I seen a few months ago told me I was not Type 1, however type 2. So I asked to be seen by a 3rd Dr in Aug and get his take on the type 1 or type 2 problem. Anyway If I am type 1 then I was 20.

Jim, can't they just run a blood test or two and give a definitive dx? What a pain!

Sorry Del, did not mean to take over your thread.

Anyway yes Dr 1 and Dr 2 did blood work, Dr 1 sees it different than DR 2 so I am taking both the results plus a new set to Dr 3 for the final vote. I am thinking that DR 1 is an older Dr and may be more old school and not up to date or should I say still thinks like he was trained 30 odd years ago.

Thanks everyone for your replies, this really is a great forum :)

They ran some sort of antibody test on me to determine that what I have is T1. That came back positive, so it appeared pretty cut-and-dry. Isn't this test pretty standard nowadays in diagnosing which type you are?

I was diagnosed 21 years ago, so I don't know what is standard these days! lol

After going back to the hospital some 5-6 times, they finally just figured out what was wrong with me.

Apparently not...There are many threads here where members were misdiagnosed, sometimes because the symptoms were a bit strange and others from what I see as a lack of aptitude from various doctors.

I should do some research to see what kind of tests can be run/should be run if one suspects they might be diabetic. You would think after all this time they can run a "blood test"...Obviously, blood glucose levels can be checked, as well as C-Peptides, but I'm not sure what the C-Peptides diagnose.

At 33 (now 37) had blood surger of 792. Family Doc thought Type 2 even with that reading and average build, no inulin just meds for a month or two, did work some at first, now learned that it was the "Honeymoon" period. Then Changed to Type 1. Had good control till the end of last year, I am Police Officer working swing shifts and it got out of hand. I now see an Edo and I just put in the paperwork to get on the pump. I had the C-Peptides Blood test to varify for insurance I was Type 1.
Lots of good info and help here.

(Prepare for sarcasm)

Wow. Well we're all just a bunch of weirdos developing "Juvenile" diabetes at such a late age. We should be treated like we have one, large eye or something weird like that...

"Surprise". I like that :)

Thanks for that link. It describes me perfectly...... Although the doc hasn't mentioned LADA or type 1.5 or any such thing, only type 1. I will ask about this next appointment.
