Question about what happened when you were diagnosed...

So, reading the "how were you diagnosed" thread I saw at least a couple stories that sounded like my own experience where once we were admitted to the hospital, we weren't allowed to eat. Some of us for days. Why is that?

I know I wasn't exactly lucid when I was admitted, but it seems to me I didn't even have any insulin adminstered until my second day, and they kept telling me "We're waiting for your blood sugars to come down..." Now that I know what I know, how would my bsl's come down if my pacreas was kaput? Maybe they were giving me insulin through an IV, but I just *don't* recall that they were.

Anyone else?

They started me on insulin the first day. I wasn't allowed to eat for the first week, and they were pouring fluids into me because I was so dehydrated. Of course it was a Navy hospital, and they don't do anything like anyone else, so it's hard to say.

I was given insulin through a drip from the first day and wasn't allowed to eat for one or two days till it came down.

I can't imagine not eating for more than a day; I mean I fast on Yom Kippur, but I know that I'll be able to feast at the end of the day.

I only had to skip dessert and breakfast before I saw my endo, who then told me I could eat when I got home, but I had to inject myself before I did.

I don't recall any of that--I was unconscious for several days. I know I wasn't eating during the coma, and I'm certain they must have been giving me insulin from the gitgo, cuz I finally did wake up!

You know, I can’t remember if they kept me from eating when first admitted to the hospital. I do remember being incredibly hungry and when my parents came to visit me the first week I talked them into smuggling in a pizza for me. I was new to diabetes and at that time thought I only had to give up sugar :D

I refused to let them take me to the hospital... My dr gave me glocufage(sp?) and they made me an appointment with an endo the next week. They also put me on a 2000cal diet until I saw the doc.

Many of us where in the hospital because we where in DKA. Many of the DKA treatment protocols require the correction of the acidosis before they will let you eat and even sometimes drink anything by mouth.

I was so nauseated from the ketones it was several days before I even wanted to eat.

I was neither DKA nor in a coma (don't ask me how) and I still was not allowed to eat. And I vividly remember that ****ed "Roy's Big Steak and Cheese" commercial with the rockstar screaming on the conference room table singing about this cheese steak sandwich for Roy Roger's Restaurants while I was starving to death.

Maybe they use the same protocols in any case?

Me too Mick. I was in a coma for a few days. The weird thing is, it wasn't when first diagnosed but a year later. I guess I will have to post my story for everyone to understand. Long story short, stupid dr., wrong treatment, 1 yr. later DKA with high numbers and almost total kidney shutdown. :(

I drove myself to the ER at about 11am, was put on an IV immediately, given insulin, and was allowed to eat a very low carb meal at dinnertime. They check my glucose as it steadily declined from 583. By the time they let me go the next day at noon, my BG was around 200 and I went right over to the grocery store to see what my new diet would consist of.

I went to my PCP at 9:00 AM not feeling well (I had no idea what symptoms of diabetes were). BS of 650, A1c of 13.5. She kept me in her office all day. Gave me insulin right away. Made me drink lots of water.

By noon I was down around 300 or so. Very hungry. I asked if I could leave and go get something to eat, cause I WAS STILL HUNGRY. They said no and that I needed to stay there for observation. On that same day, a drug company rep had brought a huge spread of food in for the office. So my doctor went into their lunch room and loaded up some paper plates with salmon and broccolli the rep had brought in.

My doctor kept me in her office because she said she didn't want to send me to the hospital for the weekend as she know most of the interns and she though I would do just as well at home with her cell phone number in my pocket. So I called my wife, after she stopped crying, she took me home and promptly threw out anything with sugar in it (remember, we were new).

My story is kind of similar to Bryan's. My mom and myself drove to the ER, after my primary dr. got me admitted. I stayed overnight, was hooked up (IV) to insulin, fluids, etc...but wasn't given anything to eat til the next morning. I think they did want to see my sugars come down before giving me anything to eat...and they were testing me on the hour to make sure ( along with many other blood tests :eek: ). It wasn't a fun experience, but at least I realized that I would start feeling better. :)

I had gone to the dr 3 times for an infection that just kept coming back. Finally, one night my legs cramped all night. My wife had a glucometer as she is prone to hypos and she checked my sugar... it said HIGH.. The next day she made go to the DR... Saw a new dr and this dr figured it was diabetes from the start.

She took my blood, sent it to the lab, sent me home with glucofage and told me only to eat 2000 cal a day. The next day she calls and tells me my BS was 660 and that I needed to go the hospital. I said, unless its absolutely necessary, I am not going. We argued a bit and I didnt go.

Yea and how come we get them liquid diets? We get the watered down chicken broth, a bowl of green and brown jello that you cannot even get your spoon thru and a half melted freakin grape popsicle. Oh and then they have to nerve to come in and ask us how your dinner was. Yeah what they don't know is I have a wonderful sandwich and some chips sitting in the cabinet right next to my bedside yummmmmmmmm.

thats basically what I do, except the last time I was in the hospital the nurse found my stash of whoppers and big macs... :( uummm she was not amused and started checking everyone for food when they came to visit......
